McCann's homer lifts Yankees over White Sox in extras
Aug 25, 2014 - 2:18 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Pinch-hitter Brian McCann hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to lift the New York Yankees over the Chicago White Sox, 7-4, on Sunday.Jake Petricka (0-3), who recorded the final two outs in the ninth, stayed on to pitch the 10th for the White Sox. He struck out Martin Prado and Mark Teixeira before giving up a double to Carlos Beltran. Chase Headley was intentionally walked prior to McCann's blast down the right-field line.
"It was awesome," McCann said. "To come off the bench, you know, pinch-hitting is not the easiest thing to do. So to get a pitch up in the zone and not miss it with the game on the line was special."
David Huff (3-1) got the win after tossing a scoreless top of the 10th. New York starter Chris Capuano gave up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts over six innings.
Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Yankees, who have won four in a row.
Avisail Garcia, Alexei Ramirez and Conor Gillaspie homered for the White Sox, who have dropped six straight. Chris Sale got the start and allowed four unearned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks over six innings.
"I just wasn't able to capitalize when I needed to," said Sale. "Things just kind of unraveled for me."
Ramirez led off the game with a homer.
The White Sox took a 3-0 lead on Gillaspie's two-run homer in the top of the sixth.
But Dayan Viciedo's fielding error in the bottom half opened the floodgates for the Yankees. Prado hit a deep fly ball to left-center field that Viciedo dropped. Prado made it to second and scored on Teixeira's double to left.
Beltran and Francisco Cervelli walked to load the bases with two outs. Zelous Wheeler forced in a run when he was hit by a pitch. Suzuki followed with a two-run single to right-center field, making it 4-3 New York.
The Yankees sent David Robertson to the mound in the ninth, but Garcia hit a game-tying homer to right. Robertson had converted 22 consecutive save chances since June 5.
