Indians edge White Sox in 10 innings
Sep 6, 2014 - 6:26 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - David Murphy hit an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Cleveland Indians to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Friday at Progressive Field.Yan Gomes led off with a triple to left field off Maikel Cleto (0-1). Michael Taylor went full bore into the wall while trying to make the catch. The bases were then loaded as the next two batters were intentionally walked.
Eric Surkamp struck out Jason Kipnis swinging before Ronald Belisario served up Murphy's liner that dropped in front of center fielder Adam Eaton.
"You're kind of rolling the dice with every guy and trying to get a force out in there, but they end up getting (the hit)," said Chicago manager Robin Ventura.
It was Murphy's first at-bat after being activated from the disabled list earlier Friday. He was on the DL since August 10 with a strained right oblique.
The White Sox couldn't cash in with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the 10th. C.C. Lee (1-1) retired Dayan Viciedo on a foul popup and got Marcus Semien to ground out to second base.
T.J. House got the start for Cleveland in the opener of this three-game set and tossed seven innings.
"I think he's learning about himself and what pitches work against major league hitters," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said about House.
Among the seven hits allowed by the 24-year-old rookie was a home run by Alexei Ramirez in the third.
Ramirez left the game two innings later after being hit on the left foot by a pitch.
White Sox ace Chris Sale gave up three singles in the first inning, including one to Carlos Santana that produced a run. The lefty allowed only two more hits through his six frames of work.
