Viciedo, White Sox down Twins in 9th
Sep 14, 2014 - 6:42 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Dayan Viciedo's two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Chicago White Sox a 7-6 walkoff win over the Minnesota Twins in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. After Kurt Suzuki put the Twins up by a run in the top of the ninth, Jose Abreu drew a 14-pitch leadoff walk against Glen Perkins (3-3) in the bottom half to bring the winning run to the plate. After Avisail Garcia grounded into a fielder's choice, Viciedo came up and crushed his 21st of the year 10 rows deep in the left field seats.
"I went into the at-bat thinking to myself that I would do whatever I could to get on base and help tie the game," Abreu said of the at-bat through an interpreter.
Garcia hit a three-run homer and Abreu added a solo shot, giving the rookie sensation 100 RBI on the season.
Jake Petricka (1-4) won for the first time this season after pitching the top of the ninth.
The two teams are trending in opposite directions, as the White Sox have won four straight games and the Twins have lost four straight.
"It was a long day, a tough day and probably about as tough a loss as you'll have," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said.
Neither starter pitched very well. Scott Carroll gave up four runs in five innings for Chicago, and Logan Darnell yielded four runs -- three earned -- in 4 1/3 innings in his fourth major league start.
Minnesota pushed four runs across in the top of the first inning, all with two outs. With two on, Trevor Plouffe singled in a run and with a full count and runners on the corners, Oswaldo Arcia crushed a three-run blast to center.
Chicago got most of it back in the bottom half, with Garcia smacking a no- doubter to left with two on.
The score held until the fifth inning, when Abreu smacked his 34th homer of the season to right-center to knot the game. Plouffe temporarily gave Minnesota the lead back in the sixth with his solo homer, but pinch-hitter Conor Gillaspie tied it in the seventh with an RBI base knock to center.
It was 5-5 heading into the ninth when Arcia led off with a single and was pinch-ran for by Aaron Hicks. Eduardo Nunez advanced Hicks to second with a sac bunt and Chris Parmelee doubled, but miscommunication on the base paths led to Parmelee getting tagged out and Hicks landing on third base.
The mistake didn't matter, however, as Suzuki followed with a sharp grounder down the third base line to put the Twins up, 6-5.
Game Notes
Abreu reached base in four of his five plate appearances and scored three runs ... Carroll had lost three straight starts ... The blown save was Perkins' sixth of the season ... Twins second baseman Brian Dozier scored his 100th run.
