Pena's pinch-hit HR lifts Reds past Brewers
May 2, 2014 - 3:48 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Brayan Pena's go-ahead, pinch-hit two-run homer highlighted a five-run eighth inning and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers, 8-3, in the opener of a four-game set.Zack Cozart led off the eighth with a single to right-center off Jim Henderson (2-1) and after Tucker Barnhart moved Cozart over with a sacrifice bunt, Pena smacked a shot that just snuck over the right-field wall to make it 5-3.
"I was very excited because I didn't want to let the skipper down, you know, because he trusts me in that big situation," Pena said.
Todd Frazier worked a bases-loaded walk against Rob Wooten later in the inning before Ryan Ludwick grounded a two-run single through the hole on the left side of the infield for an 8-3 cushion.
Jonathan Broxton fired a scoreless ninth to back eight strong innings from Homer Bailey (2-2), who surrendered three runs on eight hits and a walk to notch the win.
"When he's on he's tough and early on I thought he threw a nice ballgame," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Bailey.
Frazier belted a two-run shot among his two hits and Barnhart hit his first career homer for Cincinnati, which had dropped four of its last five games coming in.
Carlos Gomez hit a two-run double for the Brewers, who have lost back-to-back tilts on the heels of a 5-1 stretch. Marco Estrada allowed three runs on six hits and four walks over six innings in a no-decision.
Milwaukee opened the scoring on a Jean Segura RBI single in the second, but the Reds got the run back in the fifth on Barnhart's solo blast to right.
Frazier's two-run shot into left-center put the Reds in front in the sixth, but Gomez's two-bagger knotted the contest at 3-3 in the seventh.
The Reds had the bases loaded with one away in the home half, but Frazier flied out and Ludwick fanned to end the threat.
Game Notes
Cincinnati was 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base ... Segura was the lone Milwaukee player with more than one hit.
