Perez, Morse homer as Giants top Reds
Jun 5, 2014 - 3:22 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Juan Perez's two-run homer in the sixth inning proved to be the deciding run in the San Francisco Giants' 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. With two outs in the sixth, Michael Morse launched his 12th homer of the season into the left-field seats that cut San Fran's deficit in half to 2-1. Brandon Hicks followed with a single and Perez drove him in with a home run to left that gave the Giants a 3-2 lead.
Perez entered the game 1-for-21 this season and had just one career homer before Wednesday.
"Juan had been playing very well down in (Triple-A) Fresno," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Perez. "He came through today for us. We needed it. Great win for us after a tough night."
Ryan Vogelsong (4-2) had some early struggles, but gained momentum as the game went on to earn the win.
Vogelsong allowed two runs -- both in the third -- on seven hits with nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings.
The Reds didn't record a hit after the fourth inning as four relievers closed out the win, with Sergio Romo converting his 18th save of the season after a 1-2-3 ninth.
"They have a very efficient bullpen," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "Vogelsong did a very good job. You have to tip your hat. I hate to do it to starting pitchers, but you have to do for him."
Todd Frazier homered and Jay Bruce knocked in the other run for Cincinnati, which had its four-game winning streak snapped.
Tony Cingrani (2-6) was charged with the loss after giving up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings.
Billy Hamilton, who finished 3-for-4 on the evening, reached second on an infield single and subsequent throwing error by Buster Posey to start the third inning. However, Hamilton was nabbed attempting to steal third a couple pitches before Frazier put the Reds on the board with his solo blast.
Brandon Phillips then doubled to right center before Bruce pulled a double down the right-field line to help Cincinnati to a 2-0 edge.
Phillips reached on an error by Brandon Crawford to lead off the eighth, but left-handed specialist Javier Lopez struck out Bruce and Jean Machi induced an inning-ending double play from Devin Mesoraco to set up Romo.
Game Notes
Hamilton had his three-game stolen base streak snapped. The Reds are 13-4 when he steals a base ... San Fran has won in seven of Vogelsong's last eight starts ... Cincinnati went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, while the Giants went 0-for-5 ... San Francisco committed three errors a night after committing a season-high four errors.
