Cueto tosses another gem as Reds beat Giants
Jun 28, 2014 - 6:24 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Johnny Cueto fired 8 1/3 innings of two-run ball as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the San Francisco Giants, 6-2, in the second installment of a four-game set.Cueto (8-5) allowed three hits and walked just two, while Billy Hamilton posted three hits, two RBI and a run scored for the Reds, who have won six of their last seven games.
"When he's sharp, he's fun to watch," Reds manager Bryan Price said of Cueto.
Aroldis Chapman recorded the final two outs in the ninth to notch his 16th save of the season.
Madison Bumgarner (9-5) yielded five runs on nine hits and a walk over six frames for San Francisco, which has dropped 13 of its last 17 games.
"It was a frustrating time, trying to minimize damage ... it was hit after hit," Bumgarner said.
The game was scoreless until the Reds erupted for five runs in the fifth.
Devin Mesoraco doubled down the left-field line the lead off the frame. and after Brayan Pena grounded out, Chris Heisey's single put runners on the corners. Zack Cozart's base hit to center plated Mesoraco.
Cueto reached on a bunt to load the bases and Hamilton followed with a bloop single to right to plate both Heisey and Cozart. Todd Frazier's base hit to center scored Cueto.
Brandon Phillips then grounded into a force out to put runners on the corners and Hamilton came across on Jay Bruce's single to right and give the Reds a 5-0 advantage.
San Francisco got on the board with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Brandon Hicks worked a walk to begin the frame and scored when pinch-hitter Tyler Colvin drove a triple into the gap in right-center. Colvin scored on a Hunter Pence groundout two batters later.
Bruce's two-out RBI single in the seventh increased the Reds' margin to 6-2.
Game Notes
Cueto has a 1.88 ERA on the season ... Hamilton stole his 33rd base of the year ... Cincinnati was 6-for-11 with runners in scoring position, while the Giants finished 0-for-4.
