Peralta pitches Brewers past Reds

Jul 22, 2014 - 5:12 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Braun drove in a pair of runs as the Milwaukee Brewers grabbed a 5-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a three-game series.

Carlos Gomez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jean Segura also scored twice for the Brewers, who moved a half-game ahead of idle St. Louis for first place in the NL Central.

Wily Peralta (11-6) allowed a run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts over seven innings of work.

"He made some big pitches when he needed to," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of his starter.

Kristopher Negron and Billy Hamilton each hit a solo home run for the Reds, who have dropped their past four games. Mat Latos (2-2) was touched for five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits with three strikeouts in seven innings on the mound.

"(Latos) pitched OK, but we didn't help him out a lot," Reds manager Bryan Price said.

Segura led off the third with a triple off the wall in right-center. As Segura was sliding into third, Ramon Santiago's throw hit him and rolled into foul territory and he crossed the plate for a 1-0 lead.

Peralta and Gomez followed with consecutive singles and moved up a base on Scooter Gennett's fly out. Braun doubled to bring the both home for a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth, Segura singled with one out and moved to second on Peralta's sacrifice bunt. Gomez's ground-rule double scored Segura, and he stole third before coming home when Gennett's grounder to first was misplayed by Donald Lutz for a 5-0 lead.

Hamilton led off the sixth with his sixth home run of the season to get the Reds on the board, and Negron's pinch-hit blast in the eighth made it a 5-2 game.

Francisco Rodriguez tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his 29th save of the season.

Game Notes

Before the game, the Brewers selected the contract of pitcher Jeremy Jeffress from Triple-A Nashville, optioned pitcher Rob Wooten to Nashville and transferred pitcher Jim Henderson to the 60-day disabled list ... Both teams left five men on base, but Cincinnati went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position, while Milwaukee was 2-for-7.
