Reds lose again in Cleveland

Aug 5, 2014 - 4:34 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Corey Kluber took a shutout into the eighth inning and Lonnie Chisenhall belted a three-run homer, as Cleveland continued its home domination of the Cincinnati Reds with a 7-1 triumph Monday night.

Yan Gomes added a two-run homer and Michael Brantley drove in two runs for the Indians, who won their fourth straight overall and 10th in a row at home against the Reds.

Kluber (12-6), who was coming off his first career shutout last Wednesday against Seattle, won his fifth straight decision by allowing six hits and a run over 7 1/3 innings. He had seven strikeouts and two walks.

Alfredo Simon (12-7) was charged with six hits and five runs over five frames and lost his fourth consecutive start.

Brayan Pena doubled in Cincinnati's only run in the opener of four straight contests for the Ohio Cup.

The Reds, who won three of four games at Miami over the weekend, went 1-for-10 with men in scoring position Monday and left 11 runners on base.

"We're not going to pitch perfectly every game," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We've had to be a good situational offensive club, and we just didn't show up to play. That was disappointing."

Jason Kipnis doubled to start the bottom of the opening inning. He was sacrificed to third and scored on Brantley's groundout to first.

"Anytime you score in the first inning and get off to that kind of start, it's always nice for the confidence of the team," Kluber said. "We kept adding on."

Kluber stranded two men on base in the first and third innings, and the Indians gave him some breathing room in the fourth. Brantley and Carlos Santana singled to begin the frame, and Chisenhall smacked the next offering from Simon over the wall in center for his 11th homer of the season.

Brantley singled to left to drive in Jose Ramirez in the fifth for a 5-0 cushion.

Billy Hamilton flied out to center to leave runners at first and second in the top of the seventh, but the Reds finally pushed a run across in the eighth. Jay Bruce and Devin Mesoraco sandwiched singles around a Todd Frazier strikeout. Nick Hagadone then surrendered Pena's double to the left-field corner.

Kluber hadn't given up an earned run in his previous 25 innings until Pena's hit.

Gomes homered to left with David Murphy aboard in the eighth.

John Axford pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his 10th save.
