Marlins hold on to beat Reds

Aug 9, 2014 - 5:10 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Nathan Eovaldi pitched eight shutout innings for his first win in eight starts and the Miami Marlins beat the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 on Friday night to open a three-game series.

The Reds scored in the ninth inning against Marlins closer Steve Cishek after Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco hit consecutive doubles, but Cishek stranded runners at the corners and escaped with his 28th save.

The Marlins beat the Reds for only the third time in their last 13 meetings.

Eovaldi (6-6) had six strikeouts and gave up just five hits and a walk to snap an 0-3 skid in his previous seven outings. It was his first win since June 23 at Philadelphia.

"He executed his pitches and mixed in just enough breaking balls to keep them off-balanced," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said of Eovaldi.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo homer for Miami and Frazier had three hits for Cincinnati.

Frazier doubled and scored on Mesoraco's hit, suddenly putting the Marlins in trouble. After a bunt moved Mesoraco up, Miami shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria dove behind the mound to get Skip Schumaker's bouncer for the second out. Kris Negron walked, but Cishek struck out Zack Cozart to end the game and snap the Reds' three-game winning streak.

Mike Leake (9-10) pitched seven innings for the Reds. He had seven strikeouts but gave up two runs on five hits and four walks and had a two-start winning streak snapped.

"I just tried to keep the ball down," said Leake. "Guys were getting on base but at least I was able to minimize them crossing the plate."

The Marlins stranded runners at the corners in the top of the first. Billy Hamilton drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the inning but was picked off trying to steal by Eovaldi.

Miami had two more hits in the second inning with no result and the Reds had singles in the second and fourth innings, stranding both runners.

The Marlins finally broke through in the sixth on Jarrod Saltalamacchia's bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center field for a 1-0 lead. Stanton doubled it in the seventh with his 28th homer of the season, a blast to left.

Game Notes

Both teams had seven hits but Miami was 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10 men on base ... Eovaldi threw 112 pitches, including 72 strikes.
