Lohse goes the distance as Brewers shut down Reds
Sep 25, 2014 - 3:07 AM Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jean Segura posted two hits, two runs scored and two RBI, while Kyle Lohse recorded his second shutout of the season in Milwaukee's 5-0 victory over Cincinnati in the middle test of a three-game series.Carlos Gomez hit a run-scoring double and Rickie Weeks drove in a run for the Brewers, who won for just the second time in their last seven to keep their slim postseason hopes alive.
Lohse (13-9) struck out six and gave up just two hits over his 106-pitch performance, and also drove in a run.
Jack Hannahan produced both hits for the Reds, who have lost seven of their last nine. Daniel Corcino (0-2) allowed two runs on four hits with four walks over 4 1/3 innings.
In the fourth, Aramis Ramirez doubled with one out, moved to third and scored on a single from Weeks -- who was thrown out trying to reach second.
Milwaukee went up 2-0 in the following frame as Segura and Lohse walked, the former moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Gomez double.
The Brewers failed to increase their lead despite having the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh as Ramirez grounded to third.
Segura's two-run double and a Lohse sacrifice fly increased the visitors' edge to 5-0 in the eighth.
Lohse retired six straight to open the contest before Hannahan's single to kick off the home third, set down the next eight until Hannahan's two-out hit in the fifth, then completed his outing by turning away the final 13 Reds.
Cincinnati center fielder Billy Hamilton timed his jump perfectly at the wall in left center to rob Ryan Braun of a homer in the third inning. However, he bumped the top of his head against the bottom portion of the fence and left the contest.
Game Notes
Lohse first tossed nine scoreless frames in a 9-0 decision against the Cubs on June 1, during which he gave up three hits and fanned six while throwing 93 pitches ... Hamilton was later diagnosed with a mild concussion.
