Trout, Angels rally past Indians
Apr 29, 2014 - 5:43 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Trout hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning and the Angels beat the Indians, 6-3, on Monday night to open a three-game series.Raul Ibanez added a two-run triple to cap a three-run rally in the eighth that began when J.B. Shuck reached base on an error by Indians first baseman Nick Swisher.
Erick Aybar had a two-run double for the Angels, who dropped the last two games against the Yankees over the weekend to finish a 4-5 road trip. They started a nine-game homestand.
Carlos Santana hit a three-run homer for the Indians, who have lost four in a row.
Left-hander Tyler Skaggs went seven innings, striking out six and giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, but Fernando Salas (2-0) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth.
Trout stroked Justin Masterson's 3-2 pitch through the left side and Shuck scored from second base without a play at the plate after Michael Brantley's throw from left field was cut off by third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall.
The Indians intentionally walked Albert Pujols and paid for the decision when Ibanez tripled to the right-center field wall to score both baserunners and chase Masterson from the game.
"I thought Masterson was pretty good. He deserved to be out there in the eighth inning," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He had handled Ibanez so well but it didn't work out tonight."
Masterson (0-1) got his first decision of the season in his sixth start. He allowed seven hits and two walks in his 7 1/3 innings, striking out five.
Joe Smith, who pitched for Cleveland the last five seasons, worked around a David Murphy single in the ninth inning to pick up his first save with the Angels.
"I just tried to keep the ball down and keep it in the ballpark," said Smith. "To get my first save against them is cool."
Trout hit a one-out triple in the first inning and scored on Pujols' ground out to give the Angels an early 1-0 lead.
Skaggs retired the first 10 Indians hitters before Swisher hit a one-out double in the fourth inning. Jason Kipnis followed with a walk and Santana stroked a 2-2 curveball over the left-field wall for his second home run of the season and a 3-1 Indians lead.
"I wanted to get outs as soon as possible," said Skaggs. "They kept looking for my curveball but I got my strikeouts with my fastball."
Aybar's two-out, two-run double in the fifth inning tied the score for the Angels. Ian Stewart (walk) and David Freese (single) scored on the hit down the right-field line after reaching base with no outs.
