Tomlin strong on mound, Indians down Twins
May 7, 2014 - 4:13 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Josh Tomlin fired 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball and the Cleveland Indians defeated the Minnesota Twins, 4-2, in the second installment of a four-game set.Tomlin (1-0) struck out four and surrendered four hits and just one walk for Cleveland, which had dropped eight of its last 10 games coming in. Nick Swisher smacked an RBI single among his two hits and scored a run.
"We gave (Tomlin) the lead and he did exactly what he was supposed to do," said Indians manager Terry Francona. "He threw strikes, he used both sides of the plate, he worked ahead."
Chris Colabello cracked a solo homer for the Twins, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. Samuel Deduno (0-2) allowed four runs -- three earned -- on six hits and two walks over five frames.
The Indians jumped out to a 4-0 lead after plating a pair of runs in the first and second innings.
Swisher smacked a one-out double into the gap in right-center before Michael Brantley brought him home with a base hit into center. Brantley scampered to second on the throw home, advanced to third on Carlos Santana's groundout and scored when the first baseman Colabello was unable to handle a David Murphy grounder.
Lonnie Chisenhall led off the second with a single, moved to second on a balk and scored on a Yan Gomes double into left-center. Gomes later came home on Swisher's single into center for Cleveland's four-run spread.
"We just got behind," said Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire. "After the second and third inning, our pitching was good ... Unfortunately, they pitched pretty well themselves."
The Twins got a run back in the seventh on Colabello's blast into left-center and threatened with a two-out rally in the ninth.
Kurt Suzuki reached on a fielding error by shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and scored on Eduardo Escobar's double to left, but Bryan Shaw popped up pinch- hitter Josmil Pinto to earn his first save of the year.
Game Notes
The Indians were 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position, while Minnesota finished 0-for-3 ... Colabello's homer was his fourth of the year.
