Bedard dazzles as Rays rout Indians
May 11, 2014 - 5:31 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Erik Bedard worked six strong innings while James Loney and Matt Joyce each drove in a pair of runs to give the Tampa Bay Rays a 7-1 win over the Cleveland Indians in the second of a three- game set.Bedard (2-1) gave up just one hit with three walks and four strikeouts for the Rays, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Ben Zobrist and Evan Longoria each scored twice.
"I'm always a slow starter so the first couple were rough, but after that you just get in the groove of things and throw strikes," Bedard said.
Zach McAllister (3-3) dropped his third straight decision as he was beaten up for five runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings for the Indians, who had a four- game winning streak stopped.
Tampa Bay went on top in the third inning after Desmond Jennings led off with a single, stole second after the next two batters recorded outs, and came home on a David DeJesus single.
In the fourth, the Rays added two more for a 3-0 lead. With one out, Loney singled and moved to third on a Wil Myers double before Joyce brought him home with a sacrifice fly. Two batter later, Yunel Escobar punched a single to right to score Jennings.
The Rays kept piling on the runs in the fifth as Zobrist singled with one out and raced home on a Longoria double. Loney then singled home Longoria for a 5-0 lead.
An RBI single from Loney and sacrifice fly by Joyce in the seventh pushed the lead to 7-0.
Ryan Raburn's double in the second was the only time Bedard allowed a runner reach second base, while Juan Carlos Oviedo worked two flawless innings in relief.
"(Raburn) hit the line drive double, but other than that, there was a lot of lazy flyballs. Kind of exactly what he wants you to do," Indians manager Terry Francona said of Bedard.
Grant Balfour allowed the first three batters to reach base in the ninth and Raburn kept the game from being a shutout with his sacrifice fly. Balfour, though, then got Asdrubal Cabrera to hit into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Game Notes
The Rays also snapped a six-game home losing streak ... Bedard has won back- to-back starts after going 0-9 in his previous 15 starts. He improved to 3-3 in 14 career starts against the Indians ... McAllister fell to 1-3 in five starts against Tampa Bay.
