Errors, base-running blunders cost Indians against Astros
Aug 23, 2014 - 4:57 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Base-running mistakes in the eighth inning and a pair of errors in the ninth cost the Indians Friday night in a 5-1 loss to the Astros.Pinch-runner Gregorio Petit scored the go-ahead run on a throwing error by catcher Roberto Perez, and Jon Singleton belted a three-run homer to cap the uprising in Houston's fourth win in five games.
Pinch-hitter Mike Aviles singled against Tony Sipp (4-2) leading off the home eighth, one of only four Cleveland hits on the night. Pinch-hitter Tyler Holt then grounded a ball back to Sipp, but the throw to second was late.
Aviles then strayed off second and was caught in a rundown. Holt went to second, but was caught trying to steal third, and Perez fanned to end the inning.
Cody Allen (4-3) walked Chris Carter with one out in the ninth. Dexter Fowler sent a bouncer to first baseman Carlos Santana, but his throw to second was high to shortstop Jose Ramirez and the ball sailed into the outfield to put men at the corners.
Fowler took off for second, but the throw from Perez bounced off the chest of Ramirez and into right field, allowing Petit to score. The second error of the inning was the 99th on the season by the Indians. They had 98 all of 2013.
"We can't play like that and expect to win," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "We need to play clean because we pitched really good tonight."
Jason Castro walked, and with two outs Singleton smacked his 12th homer of the season to left field.
"Anytime you look at a four-run lead instead of a one-run lead, there is a huge cushion for our bullpen," Astros manager Bo Porter said.
The Indians put two men on with nobody out in the ninth, but Chad Qualls got a game-ending double play off the bat of Santana.
Marwin Gonzalez homered to right field leading off the top of the fifth, but Zach Walters went deep to right with two outs in the bottom of the frame.
Astros starter Brad Peacock allowed two hits and fanned four over the first five innings, but walked off the mound as he was warming up to begin the sixth. The Astros said Peacock departed due to discomfort in his right forearm.
Carlos Carrasco fanned eight over six frames for the Indians, who lost their second straight game.
