Ramirez, Indians edge Astros in 9th
Aug 24, 2014 - 4:48 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Ramirez's go-ahead single in the ninth inning lifted the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 walkoff victory over the Houston Astros in the second of a three-game set on Saturday.Tyler Holt singled off Jake Buchanan (1-3) to start the bottom of the ninth. Holt advanced to second on Roberto Perez's sacrifice bunt and Michael Bourn walked before both runners moved up a base on Buchanan's wild pitch.
Ramirez stroked a line drive just over the glove of third baseman Gregorio Petit down the left-field line to score the game-winning run.
"Hopefully, we can build off this going into September and finish strong tomorrow," said Holt.
Cody Allen (5-3) earned the win after striking out two in a scoreless ninth. Starter Danny Salazar allowed two runs -- one earned -- on three hits with seven strikeouts across six innings.
Michael Brantley and Bourn each drove in a run for the Indians, who lead the American League with 10 walkoff wins.
Jose Altuve drove in a run for the Astros, who had starter Collin McHugh give up two runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 frames.
"It was a lack of focus, which in my book is completely unacceptable," McHugh said of his performance.
Houston opened the scoring in the third. Jake Marisnick singled and Robbie Grossman walked with two outs. Altuve's base hit into right brought in both runners after Chris Dickerson's throw home was off the mark.
Ramirez hit a two-out double to center field in the home half and came home on Brantley's single to right, making it a 2-1 game.
The Indians tied the game in the fourth. Lonnie Chisenhall and Chris Dickerson both singled to lead off the frame and moved up a base on Perez's sac bunt. Bourn's groundout brought home Chisenhall to tie it.
Carlos Santana walked with one out in the eighth off Jose Veras and moved to third after Altuve's throw to second on Jason Kipnis' grounder sailed into left field. Kipnis stole second before Zach Walters grounded to shortstop Marwin Gonzalez, who threw Santana out at home. Tony Sipp came on and struck out Mike Aviles to escape the jam.
