Marlins top Rox with eighth-inning rally
Apr 3, 2014 - 10:25 PM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Casey McGehee's two-run single capped a four- run rally in the bottom of the eighth, as Miami emerged with an 8-5 victory over Colorado in the finale of a four-game, season-opening series.McGehee drove in three, Giancarlo Stanton added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI, with Adeiny Hechavarria contributing three hits and a run knocked in for the Marlins, who won three of four in the set.
A.J. Ramos (1-0) tossed a scoreless top of the eighth for the win and Steve Cishek followed suit in the ninth to earn his second save.
"Was it perfect? Nope. But we got some big hits when we needed them most," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond.
Michael Cuddyer hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI for the Rockies, who failed to gain momentum from Wednesday's positive decision. Nolan Arenado posted two hits and knocked in two, while Corey Dickerson and Troy Tulowitzki each scored twice in the setback.
Matt Belisle (0-1) was tagged with the loss a all four runs on as many hits in the deciding frame.
Hechavarria began the game-winning burst with a single and was sacrificed to second before scoring to tie the game, 5-5, on a two-out base hit from Christian Yelich. Yelich swiped second, but the Rockies lodged an unsuccessful challenge on a close play.
Jeff Baker walked and Stanton laced a single up the middle to bring in Yelich for a 6-5 game and took second on the throw home. McGehee stepped in and scored both runners on his solid hit to center.
Cishek only allowed a two-out single to Cuddyer, who moved up on defensive indifference, then fanned Carlos Gonzalez swinging to end the contest.
"This one wasn't exactly how you'd write it up," offered Cuddyer.
Each team picked up a run in the first inning. Dickerson walked, stole second, advanced on Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis' wild throw and scored on a Cuddyer groundout. In the home half, Baker singled, Stanton doubled and McGehee walked before a Garrett Jones fielder's choice plated Baker.
The Rockies tacked on three more in the third. Dickerson led off with a hit and Cuddyer chased him home with a blast to left. Tulowitzki walked two batters later, Wilin Rosario added a hit and Arenado plated Tulowitzki with a single to center.
In the home half, McGehee walked with one away, moved up on a balk and scored on Marcell Ozuna's infield hit, but the visitors countered with one in the fifth after Tulowitzki hit a one-out triple and came home on a two-out single by Arenado.
Ozuna singled and came in when Hechavarria followed with a double in the home sixth, and Miami pulled within 5-4 in the next frame as Stanton drew a one-out walk and McGehee tripled him in.
