Morneau HR in 10th sends Rox past Padres
May 19, 2014 - 2:29 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Morneau crushed a two-run homer in the 10th inning that lifted the Colorado Rockies to an 8-6 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game set.Carlos Gonzalez singled with one out in the home half and Morneau smoked a 3-2 fastball over the wall off Dale Thayer (2-2) two batters later to end it.
"Justin came up big in the end there," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Morneau. "I'm really happy for him. He's having a phenomenal season."
The Rockies had a 6-4 lead in the ninth before LaTroy Hawkins blew his first save of the season, serving up a two-run shot by Everth Cabrera.
Nick Masset (1-0) pitched a perfect top half of the 10th for Colorado to earn the win.
Seth Smith opened the scoring with a solo homer to right center in the first to give the Padres an early lead.
Colorado put up a four-spot in the third, with Charlie Blackmon's two-run single coming just before Corey Dickerson's two-run homer to left.
With two outs in the fourth, Cameron Maybin singled and scored on Rene Rivera's double. Will Venable plated Rivera a batter later with a single to center to cut the San Diego deficit to 4-3.
"You know we're going to battle. We're going to (give) 100 percent until the last out," Rivera said. "It was a tough game."
Tulowitzki increased the Colorado cushion with a solo shot to lead off the fifth, but San Diego got the run back in the next inning with a solo blast from Rivera.
In the home seventh, Blackmon and pinch-hitter Drew Stubbs singled to set up a frantic play. Following a 6-4-2-5 double play off the bat of Tulowitzki -- one in which Blackmon was erased at home and Stubbs at second and left the batter on second base -- Gonzalez brought him home with a looping single into center that pushed the spread to 6-4.
Game Notes
San Diego had won two of three entering the game ... Colorado had lost four of its last five ... Colorado starter Juan Nicasio went six innings and allowed four runs on nine hits ... Donn Roach was let off the hook for the Padres in his start after allowing four runs on four hits over three innings ... Colorado activated catcher Wilin Rosario (stomach virus) off the 15-day disabled list prior to the game and optioned catcher Mike McKenry to Triple-A Colorado Springs to make room for Rosario.
