Howard fuels Phillies in rout of Rockies
May 27, 2014 - 4:12 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - After being no-hit by Josh Beckett on Sunday, the Phillies broke out in a big way against the Rockies on Monday.Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer and drove in five runs, as Philadelphia racked up 12 hits and got a solid effort from starter Kyle Kendrick to claim a 9-0 victory over Colorado in the opener of a three-game set at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies' offensive outburst helped snap a career-high 10-game losing streak for Kendrick (1-5), who scattered six hits and four walks over 6 2/3 frames to earn his first win since Aug. 11, 2013. The Philadelphia right- hander entered the game 0-10 over his last 16 starts.
Chase Utley collected three hits, an RBI and three runs scored, while John Mayberry added a pinch-hit, two-run homer for the Phillies, who were held hitless in a nine-inning game for the first time since April 16, 1978 in Sunday's 6-0 setback against Beckett and the Dodgers.
"Good bounce back game on the offensive side," Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Good to see Kendrick was solid into the seventh against a good lineup."
Colorado starter Jhoulys Chacin (0-4) surrendered four runs on seven hits over five-plus frames to absorb the loss. Charlie Blackmon and Troy Tulowitzki each had two hits for the Rockies, who have lost four of their last five games.
"I thought he was throwing the ball pretty well," Colorado manager Walt Weiss said of Chacin. "I feel like he's progressing every time out."
Ben Revere ripped a leadoff single in the first to erase any thoughts of another no-hitter, but the Phillies' bats fell silent from there until Utley legged out an infield single with two away in the fourth.
Utley then advanced to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Howard's single to right to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
Philadelphia tacked on another two-out run in the fifth, as Domonic Brown worked a leadoff walk and Carlos Ruiz singled before Revere followed consecutive strikeouts with a chopper up the middle. Second baseman Josh Rutledge backhanded the chopper, but the speedy Revere used a head-first slide to beat Rutledge's throw to first, allowing Brown to score for a 2-0 lead.
Howard extended the margin in the sixth when he followed Utley's leadoff single with his eighth homer of the season into right-center field.
The Phillies broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning. With runners on the corners and one away, Utley scorched a double to right off Rex Brothers to score Tony Gwynn, Jr., who opened the inning with a walk.
Howard's single to left scored two more runs, and after Marlon Byrd fanned, Mayberry entered as a pinch-hitter and clubbed his second homer of the season deep to left to account for the final margin.
