Braun, Brewers down Rockies
Jun 29, 2014 - 2:37 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Ryan Braun drove in two runs with a triple and scored twice as the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Colorado Rockies, 7-4, in the third contest of a four game set from Miller Park on Saturday.Carlos Gomez, who left the game in the seventh inning with a strain on the left side of the neck, hit a three-run homer for the Brewers, who have won all six meetings with the Rockies this season.
Starter Matt Garza (5-5) earned the win after giving up four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings of work.
D.J. LeMahieu brought in two runs with a seventh-inning single and Drew Stubbs supplied three hits and an RBI for Colorado, which has dropped 11 of its last 12 games.
Jhoulys Chacin (1-7) lost his third straight start after giving up all seven runs on 11 hits across 5 2/3 frames.
"The pattern has been that he needs some time to settle into the game," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "The early damage hurt."
In the first, Braun and Jonathan Lucroy both hit one-out singles before Gomez crushed a fastball over the center-field wall to give the Brewers an early 3-0 lead.
Milwaukee tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Jean Segura and Scooter Gennett both singled to put runners on the corners before Braun brought them around with a line-drive triple to right. Lucroy's ground out to first plated Braun, giving the Brewers a 6-0 advantage.
"Offensively, he's been unbelievable," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of Lucroy.
LeMahieu, Chacin and Charlie Blackmon each stroked one-out singles to load the bases for Colorado in the sixth. Stubbs' fly ball dropped into shallow center to score LeMahieu and Troy Tulowitzki's sacrifice fly brought in Chacin.
The Brewers responded with a run in the home half. Aramis Ramirez opened the frame with a single to left, Khris Davis followed with a ground-rule double and Lyle Overbay drove in Ramirez with a base hit to left.
LeMahieu drove in two runs with an RBI single in the seventh to account for the final score.
Prior to LeMahieu's RBI single, Gomez and Braun both raced after Ryan Wheeler's pop fly into shallow center. The two players collided and Braun's right elbow sideswiped Gomez's jaw. Gomez did not return and Wheeler was credited with a single.
Francisco Rodriguez struck out two batters and retired the side in order during the ninth for his 27th save of the season.
