Bumgarner one-hits Rockies; Posey homers twice
Aug 27, 2014 - 5:15 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Madison Bumgarner took a perfect game into the eighth inning and Buster Posey homered twice as the San Francisco Giants blanked the Colorado Rockies, 3-0, on Tuesday.Bumgarner (15-9) faced the minimum through seven innings, but a 1-2 breaking ball to Justin Morneau leading off the eighth was poked down the right field line for a double. Pitching out of the stretch for the first time all game, the southpaw responded by striking out the next three batters he faced to preserve the shutout.
Bumgarner went the distance, allowing just the one hit with a career-high 13 strikeouts. He has fanned 49 over his last five starts -- 40 innings.
"That game was more impressive than a lot of no-hitters, that's how well he threw tonight," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "You look at the strikeouts, the stuff he had, the command."
Posey, who nearly became the second player in MLB history to catch two perfect games, produced the game's lone runs with his two-run homer in the sixth inning and a solo blast in the eighth. Posey caught Matt Cain's perfect game against Houston on June 13, 2012.
The Giants snapped their three-game losing skid.
Jorge De La Rosa (13-9) left the game immediately after serving up Posey's first home run with a left thumb contusion. Colorado's starter went five-plus innings and struck out five.
"He was throwing the ball really well," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "Hurt the hand during his at-bat. I don't have any major concerns right now. We've seen this before with his thumb. Hopefully it's just a bruised thumb and he'll be fine."
Hunter Pence drew a walk to lead off the sixth before Posey took a 3-1 offspeed pitch just over the wall in left-center.
Matt Belisle needed just 17 pitches to get through two innings out of the Rockies bullpen and Brooks Brown struck out two in the eighth before Posey went yard against him to make it 3-0.
With his pitch count manageable, Bumgarner went back out for his final inning and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to secure his second shutout of the season. He finished with just 103 pitches thrown.
