Stubbs' HR in 8th lifts Rockies past Padres
Sep 24, 2014 - 7:05 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Stubbs' home run in the eighth inning lifted the Colorado Rockies to a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday.Stubbs greeted Dale Thayer (4-4) with a homer to right on the first pitch of the eighth to give the Rockies the lead.
"We had some big-time plays," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. "The guys stepped up and made some big plays when it counted."
Colorado made two great defensive plays to keep it a one-run game in the home eighth. Rene Rivera led off with a drive to deep left, where Brandon Barnes leapt up at the wall to snare the would-be extra-base hit. San Diego put a pair of runners on with two outs before DJ LeMahieu made a diving stop to his left to get Alexi Amarista for the final out of the frame.
"Left field here at Petco is doable. (Barnes) made a nice play," Padres manager Bud Black said.
LaTroy Hawkins came on in the ninth and worked around a leadoff walk to record his 23rd save of the season.
Colorado snapped an eight-game road losing streak and halted San Diego's five- game winning streak.
Rafael Ynoa doubled with one out in the third and later came home on Justin Morneau's single to right to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.
Morneau, now batting .319, leads Pittsburgh's Josh Harrison by two percentage points in the race for the NL batting title.
Three straight hits from Colorado led to a run in the fourth. Barnes and Josh Rutledge each singled before LaMahieu's base hit brought in Barnes for a 2-0 advantage. Padres starter Robbie Erlin rolled a double play off the bat of Jorge De La Rosa and got Ynoa to ground out to end the inning.
San Diego tied the game with two runs in the sixth. Jedd Gyorko singled to begin the frame and Tommy Medica followed two straight strikeouts with a base hit to right. Rymer Liriano singled home a run to cut the deficit in half before Amarista tied the game with a hit to left.
Juan Nicasio (6-6) earned the win for tossing a scoreless inning in relief of starter De La Rosa, who went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.
Game Notes
Erlin surrendered two runs on six hits and two walks over four innings of work for San Diego ... De La Rosa had gone 0-5 in his last five outings on the road entering the game ... Colorado had lost 35-of-40 on the road before the win.
