Ross bests Scherzer, Padres take series from Tigers
Apr 14, 2014 - 1:57 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyson Ross outpitched Max Scherzer and Will Venable hit a two-run double, as San Diego topped Detroit, 5-1, in the rubber match of a three-game interleague set.Ross (1-2) tossed seven sterling innings, allowing a run on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Scherzer (0-1) left the game after five full frames having surrendered four runs on as many hits and three walks despite fanning a season-high 10 batters.
"Leadoff walks kill you," Scherzer said "That was the difference in the game. I have to attack the zone early in the count."
Jedd Gyorko and Xavier Nady each hit a solo homer for the Padres, who responded after a Saturday loss to take the series and win for the third time in their last four.
"Our at-bats as a team have gotten better as the season has gone on, so hopefully we can keep it going," Gyorko said.
Victor Martinez drove in the lone run for the Tigers, who have lost four of six.
Martinez evened the score with his fourth-inning base hit to plate Torii Hunter, but the Padres took the lead for good with a three-run home half.
Chase Headley and Yonder Alonso worked walks to kick off the frame, then Venable brought them both in with his double to right for a 3-1 contest. After Rene Rivera fanned, Ross helped his own cause with a base hit to score Venable to stretch San Diego's edge to 4-1.
Nady then stepped in as a pinch hitter for Ross to begin the bottom of the seventh, and ripped an Ian Krol offering deep to center. The ball traveled an estimated 422 feet.
Ex-Tiger Joaquin Benoit turned in a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts, then Huston Street stranded runners on the corners in the ninth by inducing a game- ending grounder from Rajai Davis.
Gyorko began the Padres' second turn at the plate with his first homer of the season, a blast to left.
Game Notes
Nady collected his seventh career pinch-hit home run, and the long blast was his first homer of any kind since Sept. 30, 2012 for the Giants against Street ... San Diego continues its 10-game homestand on Monday against Colorado ... Detroit returns home to host Cleveland on Tuesday.
