Blue Jays stay hot, topple Tigers
Jun 5, 2014 - 7:26 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Melky Cabrera went 3-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and two RBI and the red-hot Toronto Blue Jays were winners again on Wednesday, topping the Detroit Tigers 8-2 in the middle installment of a three-game set from Comerica Park.Jose Bautista also had three hits and drove in two runs while Adam Lind added a pair of doubles and three RBI for Toronto, which won its fourth straight game and 13th in its last 15. The Blue Jays have done plenty of their damage away from home, winning nine of their last 10 road contests.
R.A. Dickey (6-4) gave up both runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings, while four relievers combined to throw four no-hit frames.
Miguel Cabrera and Ian Kinsler had solo homers to produce the two Detroit runs, while Rick Porcello (8-3) was charged with three runs on six hits over seven innings. The Tigers have lost four straight.
"We had some opportunities. We were unable to come up with the big hit tonight," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said.
Melky Cabrera's two-out double sparked a sixth inning rally for Toronto, which trailed 2-1 through five. Porcello then walked Bautista to put two on for Lind, who delivered a bases-clearing two-bagger to the wall in center.
Detroit threatened to reclaim the lead a half inning later, as walks to Austin Jackson and Nick Castellanos around an Alex Avila single loaded the bases with no outs. Aaron Loup relieved Dickey and avoided danger, striking out pinch- hitter J.D. Martinez and inducing weak pop flies in foul territory by Rajai Davis and Kinsler.
"Tonight, I guess was one of those lucky nights where you kind of pull a rabbit out of your hat," said Loup. "Usually you don't get out of situations like that."
Toronto tacked on three more runs in the top of the eighth inning and two in the ninth to create a comfortable margin. Melky Cabrera, Lind and pinch-hitter Shawn Tolleson all drove in runs to make it 6-2 through eight. Bautista padded the cushion with a two-run double in the final inning.
Earlier, Melky and Miguel Cabrera traded solo homers in the first inning, and Kinsler gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead with his solo shot to start the third.
Game Notes
Dickey improved to 4-0 in his last five outings against the Tigers ... Bautista extended his hitting streak to 10 games ... Toronto finished 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position, while the Tigers managed to hit just 1-for-8 with RISP ...
