Porcello tosses 2nd straight SO, Tigers blank A's

Jul 2, 2014 - 4:48 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Rick Porcello tossed a four-hit shutout as the Detroit Tigers took a 3-0 win over the Oakland Athletics in the second of a three-game set.

Porcello (11-4) won his third straight start and posted his second straight shutout as he didn't issue a walk over a 95-pitch performance. He blanked the Rangers last week in Texas, giving up three hits and three walks.

He became the first Detroit pitcher to toss consecutive shutouts since Jack Morris in 1986.

"It's obviously an honor because I've seen his numbers over his career," said Porcello. "I did it for two games and he did it for 20 years. It's nice being mentioned with him, but I've got a ways to go before I match him."

J.D. Martinez hit a two-run home run while Torii Hunter drove in the other run for the Tigers, who have won three of their last four.

Brad Mills (1-1) gave up all three runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts over six-plus innings of work for the Athletics, who have dropped the first two of this set after winning four straight.

"I felt like I came out throwing strikes and making them swing at it," said Mills. "There's a couple of pitches I'd like to have back, but overall I thought I had a good game."

Detroit grabbed the lead in the fourth inning when Miguel Cabrera worked a one-out walk, moved to third on J.D. Martinez's double, then came home on a Torii Hunter groundout for a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Ian Kinsler led off with a walk and crossed the plate two batters later when Martinez crushed a pitch over the left field wall for a 3-0 advantage.

Porcello, meanwhile, breezed through the game as he ran into trouble just once, when Jed Lowrie doubled with one out in the second and moved to third on a Stephen Vogt fly out. Porcello got Alberto Callaspo to ground out to end the frame.

Oakland didn't get a runner to second base the rest of the game.
