Angels even series with Royals
Jun 29, 2014 - 4:14 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - David Freese went 3-for-4 with three RBI and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated the Kansas City Royals, 6-2, in the second tilt of a three-game set.Kole Calhoun finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored and Albert Pujols knocked in a pair of runs for Los Angeles, which bounced back from Friday's loss for its seventh win in eight games.
Mike Morin (2-1) picked up the win after stepping on the hill in relief of starter Hector Santiago after a 4:05 rain delay.
Morin allowed two runs in two innings of work, while Kevin Jepsen, newly acquired Jason Grilli and Joe Smith each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the win.
Salvador Perez and Omar Infante each had an RBI for Kansas City, which saw starter Yordano Ventura (5-7) take the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits in four innings before the rain came.
"It's all part of the grind of the season," Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer said of the lengthy delay. "There's days like this pretty much every year."
Calhoun doubled with two outs in the third before Mike Trout singled to put runners at the corners for Pujols, who slapped a single into center that gave the Angels an early lead.
Freese came up in the fourth with runners at the corners and singled home Howie Kendrick to make it 2-0.
Following the prolonged delay, LA opened it up with a four-run sixth inning.
Erick Aybar singled and Kendrick walked to begin the inning, then worked a double steal as C.J. Cron struck out. Freese then followed with a single to center that plated the pair.
Freese stole second, his first of the season, and scored on Calhoun's base hit to left. Pujols capped the Angels' scoring with a single to center that plated Calhoun.
"It was nice to come out there and get some runs after the rain delay," Freese said.
Perez got Kansas City on the board with an RBI single in the home half of the sixth and Infante added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to account for the final margin.
Game Notes
Grilli was acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Ernesto Frieri on Friday ... Santiago has lost nine straight decisions and has now made 17 appearances since his last win on Aug. 18 ... Five of Kansas City's six hits went for singles, with Alex Gordon's double as the only extra-base hit ... The Angels went 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position, while KC finished 1- for-8 in those instances.
