Shields, Royals shut out Giants
Aug 10, 2014 - 4:19 AM Kansas City, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - James Shields tossed his first complete game of the season and the Kansas City Royals shut out the San Francisco Giants, 5-0, in the second of three games at Kauffman Stadium on Saturday.Shields (11-6) surrendered just four hits with one walk and four strikeouts to earn his ninth career shutout.
"He had everything going on tonight," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He was commanding every pitch extremely well."
Alex Gordon homered and scored twice for the Royals, who have won six straight games and nine of their last 10.
Joe Panik doubled and walked for San Francisco, which dropped its third straight game. Tim Hudson (8-9) lost his third straight decision after giving up three runs on six hits over six-plus innings of work.
Gordon opened the scoring in the fifth with a leadoff blast to right-center field for his 11th home run of the season, making it a 1-0 game.
The Royals pulled away with a four-run seventh. Billy Butler doubled to deep center to open the frame and Gordon singled to place runners at the corners. Lorenzo Cain then ended Hudson's outing with an RBI single up the middle.
Jeremy Affeldt took the mound and got Raul Ibanez to ground into a double play. Mike Moustakas plated Gordon from third with a double down the right-field line and came home on Alcides Escobar's single to left. Omar Infante's liner over a leaping Affeldt into center knocked in Escobar for a 5-0 score.
Panik doubled to center to lead off the eighth for the Giants, but was left stranded after Shields retired the next three batters.
"He was tough," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Shields. "He had four pitches going, hitting his spots. We just couldn't get anything going against him."
