Baker, Rangers top Royals
Aug 25, 2014 - 4:21 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Scott Baker recorded his first win as a starter in over three years to help the Texas Rangers salvage the finale of a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals with a 3-1 win on Sunday.Baker (2-3) earned his first win as a starter since July 23, 2011, a span of 11 starts with three different teams. Baker, who was on the right side of a decision during a 14-inning win over Tampa Bay on Aug. 12, allowed one run on five hits over five innings on Sunday. He last started on July 13 against the Los Angeles Angels.
Neftali Feliz closed it down in the ninth to record his sixth save of the season.
"I like the confidence our young players are getting," said Rangers manager Ron Washington. "(Our bullpen) was tremendous."
Adrian Beltre went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Adam Rosales and Robinson Chirinos also knocked in a run for Texas, which had lost three of its last four entering the game.
Jason Vargas (10-6) went six innings and was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on 11 hits and four walks.
"I thought it was a start that he really had to grind out," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "I thought he did a phenomenal job. He didn't have any clean innings, but I thought he did a phenomenal job keeping us in the game."
Daniel Robertson led off the game with a double to right, Elvis Andrus walked and Beltre sent a double to left that scored Robertson. Left fielder Alex Gordon got to the ball quickly and tossed to Alcides Escobar, who relayed home to get Andrus at the plate.
Rosales doubled home a run in the second and Chirinos drove Alex Rios in during the third to stake the hosts to a 3-0 lead.
Billy Butler's ninth homer of the season in the fourth inning produced the lone Kansas City run.
