Angels rout Mets behind HR barrage

Apr 14, 2014 - 1:56 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Raul Ibanez connected on back-to-back-to-back home runs in the first inning to spark the LA Angels of Anaheim to a 14-2 blowout victory over the New York Mets in the rubber match of a three-game interleague series.

Hank Conger tacked on a two-run blast in the home run barrage against Bartolo Colon (1-2), who surrendered four of the Angels' five round-trippers and was tagged for nine runs on 11 hits over just five innings.

"He was just up in the zone, that's just not him. When you get it up in the zone they'll hit it hard," Mets manager Terry Collins said of Colon.

C.J. Wilson (2-1) was much more effective on the hill, striking out nine over seven frames and limiting New York to two runs on six hits and three walks.

All nine hitters in Los Angeles' starting lineup recorded a hit and scored at least one run. Ian Stewart homered and drove in three, while Trout and J.B. Shuck each finished with three hits and an RBI.

"We came out swinging and never looked back," Trout said. "Everyone stepped up today."

David Wright singled in a run in the first inning and Juan Lagares scored in the fifth on Eric Young's double-play ball to account for New York's offense.

The first two games of this series went extra innings, but Sunday's meeting was all Angels from start to finish -- beginning with a four-spot in the first frame.

Trout hit a payoff pitch deep to straightaway center for his fourth home run of the season, Pujols launched one into the left-field seats and Ibanez cranked a 2-1 fastball deep to right for his second homer in as many games.

It was the first time the Angels hit three consecutive homers since July 27, 2009, and Kole Calhoun nearly made it four in a row with a shot to right- center. The ball hit off the wall for a double, though, and Calhoun came around on Stewart's two-out two-bagger for a 4-1 cushion.

The first five hitters in the home fourth reached base and three came around to score, as Erick Aybar tripled in a pair and trotted home on Shuck's base hit.

Conger took Colon deep in the fifth for a 9-2 advantage, and Scott Rice yielded a pair of runs in the sixth when he loaded the bases, issued a free pass to Ibanez and uncorked a wild pitch that brought in Trout.

Another wild pitch, this one from John Lannan, allowed Calhoun to score in the eighth, and Stewart's two-run homer later in the frame accounted for the final margin.
