Angels win in Trout's homecoming

May 14, 2014 - 3:41 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - A two-run double by Luis Jimenez capped a four-run sixth inning and the Angels beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3 in Los Angeles center fielder Mike Trout's homecoming.

Trout, who grew up in nearby Millville, New Jersey, received a standing ovation from the Citizens Bank Park crowd in his first at-bat and finished 1- for-5 as he returned to the area for the first time as a big leaguer.

"It means a lot to me the way they cheered for me. That was pretty cool," Trout said.

Collin Cowgill had two hits, a walk and scored one run for the Angels, who claimed the first of two meetings against the Phillies.

Matt Shoemaker (1-1) picked up his first major league win after allowing two runs on three hits in five innings.

Philadelphia starter Cliff Lee (3-4) kept the Angels off the board for the first five innings before two Cody Asche errors at third base contributed to Lee allowing four unearned runs in the sixth.

"All I control are the pitches that I make," said Lee. "When you don't play complete baseball it's hard to win at this level. When the pitcher's not throwing strikes, your team's not swinging the bat or you're not playing solid defense -- it's hard to win if any of those are missing. We just gotta do a better job at playing well-rounded baseball."

Cowgill hit a leadoff double and an Albert Pujols bouncer went through Asche to put men on the corners with one out. After Howie Kendrick walked to load the bases, Asche made a nice play to field Chris Iannetta's high chopper. However, his throw home was slightly wide and catcher Carlos Ruiz failed to keep his foot on the plate, allowing a run to score.

The Phillies challenged the play and the safe call was upheld.

"The kid had a tough night at third base. Those kind of games can happen," said Philadelphia manager Ryne Sandberg.

Grant Green tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly before Jimenez doubled down the left-field line and into the corner put the visitors on top.

Jimenez then made a stellar defensive play in the bottom of the sixth. With two men aboard, Marlon Byrd hit a liner to third baseman Jimenez, who made a diving catch and tagged out Chase Utley to complete the inning-ending double play.

The Phillies did close to within a run when Domonic Brown tripled to begin the seventh and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ruiz.

Joe Smith and Ernesto Frieri combined to shut down the Phillies over the final two innings, with the latter earning his fifth save.

Shoemaker, making the second big league start of his career, threw only 22 pitches through three perfect innings, but the fourth proved to be more taxing.

Ben Revere, who chased down a ball hit to the right-center field gap by Iannetta to end the top of the inning, led off with a single and Utley tripled to the right-field corner with one out.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia challenged the call that Utley was safe at third base. After review, the umpires ruled that the play would stand as called.

Utley then scored on a Ryan Howard single to make it 2-0.

Game Notes

The Angels improved to 4-8 in one-run games this season ... The Phillies have lost seven straight interleague games and six in a row to the Angels ... Lee gave up six hits and struck out seven in seven innings ... Asche committed a third error in the seventh ... The Phillies started a stretch Tuesday that will see them play 15 of 18 games at home.
