Trout, Angels complete sweep of Rangers
Jul 14, 2014 - 1:57 AM Arlington, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Trout went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored as the red-hot Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim completed their first ever four-game sweep of the Texas Rangers with a 10-7 victory on Sunday.Albert Pujols went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Angels (57-37), who head into the All-Star break riding a five-game winning streak.
"We're playing well...but these guys definitely need to catch their breath," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
Tyler Skaggs (5-5) got the win despite giving up six runs on seven hits over five-plus innings.
Alex Rios knocked in three runs and scored a run for the Rangers (38-57), who have lost eight in a row. Scott Baker (0-3) allowed five runs on nine hits over four innings.
Rios' sacrifice fly in the first gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
But the Angels responded with three runs in the second. With the bases loaded and two outs, Trout hit a three-run double to center.
Erick Aybar added an RBI single in the top of the third.
The home team tied things up in the bottom half of the frame. With the bases loaded and one out, Rios hit a two-run double to right. Adrian Beltre's RBI groundout made it 4-4.
The Angels took the lead back in the fourth. Kole Calhoun hit a one-out double and raced home on Trout's double to left-center field.
Los Angeles tacked on two more runs in the fifth. David Freese's sacrifice fly and Efren Navarro's RBI double made it 7-4.
"Every time you make a mistake, they make you pay," Rangers manager Ron Washington said.
Josh Hamilton hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth, but the Rangers responded with two runs in the bottom half.
Texas scored once in the seventh and the Angels plated a run in the eighth and ninth.
Joe Smith pitched a perfect ninth inning for his 15th save of the season. He set an Angels record with his 10th consecutive appearance of at least an inning without allowing a hit.
Game Notes
The Angels are 8-2 versus the Rangers this season ... Los Angeles placed outfielder Collin Cowgill on the 15-day disabled list with a broken nose and fractured right thumb. To take Cowgill's spot on the roster, the Angels recalled infielder Grant Green from Triple-A Salt Lake ... The Angels had 15 hits.
