Calhoun, Angels down Phillies with 7-run 6th
Aug 13, 2014 - 5:55 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Kole Calhoun drove in two runs during a seven-run sixth inning as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-2, in the opener of a two-game interleague set on Tuesday.Calhoun homered among his three hits and David Freese brought in two runs with a double for the Angels, who won their eighth straight game against the Phillies.
"I don't think I've ever had two hits in an inning," said Calhoun. "Tonight was big for C.J. and the team."
C.J. Wilson (9-8) gave up just two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts across 6 2/3 frames to earn his first winning decision in his last six starts.
Ryan Howard and Marlon Byrd each drove in a run for Philadelphia, which has dropped four of its last five.
Antonio Bastardo (5-6) gave up five runs -- four earned -- on four hits during the sixth inning in relief of starter Jerome Williams, who made his first start with the Phillies since being claimed off waivers from Texas on Sunday. Williams allowed two runs on five hits with three strikeouts over 5 1/3 frames.
"Jerome did a nice job. He showed his experience, hitting his spots with his fastball," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "We just couldn't finish out the sixth inning."
The Angels took command with a seven-run bottom of the sixth. Calhoun led off the frame with a solo shot that landed just inside the right-field foul pole. After Albert Pujols singled, Bastardo took the mound and walked Josh Hamilton. Howie Kendrick drove in the tying run on a single to center with two outs.
Byrd overran Collin Cowgill's fly ball in right field and the ball bounced off the ground and into the stands for a run-scoring, ground-rule double. Freese drove in two more runs with a double down the left-field line and Chris Iannetta's base hit to right brought in Freese. Jake Diekman entered the game and was welcomed with Calhoun's bloop RBI single for a 7-2 score.
In the seventh, Darin Ruf and Andres Blanco both singled off Wilson. Jason Grilli replaced Wilson and walked Jimmy Rollins to load the bases, but Chase Utley flied out to end the frame.
Philadelphia opened the scoring in the fourth. Ben Revere and Utley both singled to place runners at the corners with one out and Howard's sacrifice fly to left scored Revere to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
The Phillies tacked on another run in the sixth. Utley worked a two-out walk before Howard's grounder hit off Wilson's leg for a single. Wilson then retrieved the ball near the mound and hastily threw off the mark to first, allowing Utley to reach third. Byrd scored Utley on the very next pitch with a single to left.
