Shoemaker stars, Angels take down Marlins

Aug 27, 2014 - 5:56 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Matt Shoemaker tossed seven scoreless innings, while Albert Pujols ended up with three hits and two RBI as the Angels claimed an 8-2 victory over Miami in the second of this three-game interleague set.

Efren Navarro drove in two, with Kole Calhoun, Mike Trout, Hank Conger and Howie Kendrick driving in a run apiece for Los Angeles, which opened up a one-game edge in the AL West after Oakland lost in Houston earlier Tuesday.

Shoemaker (13-4) allowed two hits and walked two while striking out six en route to his fourth straight positive decision and sixth in his last seven starts.

"Shoe keeps doing what he's been doing all year. He was ahead in counts all night," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "He moved the ball in and out. You couldn't ask for a better game. The offense came alive up and down the lineup and we pressured them for runs."

Jarrod Saltalamacchia picked up a ninth-inning RBI double and Ed Lucas added a run-scoring hit for the Marlins, who failed to gain momentum from a 7-1 win in Monday's opener.

Nathan Eovaldi (6-9) was touched in the loss for six runs and 10 hits over just 3 1/3 frames.

Kendrick singled home Trout to put the hosts on the board in the first, then LA broke the game open in a five-run fourth.

David Freese hit a one-out double and scored when Navarro followed with a single. Conger's base hit put two on, then Calhoun scored one with a single and Trout another on a double. Eovaldi exited for Sam Dyson, who was welcomed to the contest by Pujols' two-run single which made it 6-0.

"Nathan was leaving too many pitches up in the zone. He's going to have to make adjustments," noted Marlins skipper Mike Redmond. "It's definitely concerning. It was a missed opportunity for us."

Erick Aybar scored on a Navarro groundout in the fifth and on a Conger hit in the seventh for an eight-run bulge.

Yoslan Herrera retired the first two batters in the ninth, but Garrett Jones kept the game alive with a double before advancing on defensive indifference. Saltalamacchia snapped the shutout bid with a double and Lucas added a single, and after Lucas took second on indifference, Donovan Solano singled.

Herrera finally recovered to strike out Christian Yelich and end the game.

Game Notes

Trout and Freese also hit safely three times to pace the Angels' 16-hit attack ... Eovaldi's outing was his shortest of the season ... Prior to the contest, the Angels designated pitcher Wade LeBlanc for assignment and selected the contract of Herrera from Triple-A Salt Lake ... Miami activated infielder Derek Dietrich from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A New Orleans.
