Puig homers, Dodgers hold off Padres
Apr 2, 2014 - 5:09 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yasiel Puig hit a two-run home run and the Los Angeles Dodgers held off the San Diego Padres, 3-2, to even this three- game set from Petco Park at one game apiece.Puig had a pair of hits while Juan Uribe went 3-for-4 with a run scored for LA, which survived a scare in the ninth inning when closer Kenley Jansen loaded the bases. Jansen allowed a pair of singles and a walk before striking out Nick Hundley with a high fastball to secure his second save of the season.
"The good thing I did was I never lost my focus," Jansen said of the ninth. "I started to make my execution and got out of the inning."
Zack Greinke (1-0) went five innings for the Dodgers, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out five. The right-hander has had his way with San Diego, racking up a 4-0 record with 37 strikeouts to just seven walks in six career starts.
Ian Kennedy (0-1) was tagged for three runs on five hits in five innings for the Padres, while Seth Smith went deep for the second straight game in the setback.
"Anytime you do well regardless of what it is, it's fun," said Smith. "I'm just happy to be here and be able to contribute."
Dan Haren and Tyson Ross are set to take the hill in Wednesday's rubber match.
Puig's towering shot to left in the top of the first inning gave Greinke a 2-0 cushion to work with. Carl Crawford led off the game with a single past Jedd Gyorko in between first and second. He then stole second and took third on a poor throw before Puig plated two with his first home run of the season.
Uribe's two-out double to right-center in the top of the fourth led to a third LA run. Uribe moved to third on a throwing error and scored on Dee Gordon's poke to center two batters later.
San Diego finally got to Greinke, who retired the first 10 batters he faced, in the fourth inning on Smith's solo homer over Puig's head in right field. The Padres tacked on another in the fifth when Gyorko came around to score on a wild pitch.
Paco Rodriguez, Chris Withrow and J.P. Howell all tossed scoreless innings of relief for the Dodgers to set up Jansen's ninth.
