Giants edge Dodgers again
Apr 17, 2014 - 7:05 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pablo Sandoval's RBI single in the seventh inning lifted the San Francisco Giants to a 2-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. The news for the Dodgers could have been worse. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez left the game after he was hit on the outside of his left hand by a Ryan Vogelsong pitch leading off the seventh inning, but X-rays taken during the game came back negative.
Buster Posey also had an RBI single for the Giants, who won the opener of the three-game series 3-2 on Tuesday on Hector Sanchez's RBI single in the 12th inning.
The Giants are 4-1 in the season series.
Dee Gordon drove in the Dodgers run with a triple off Vogelsong in the sixth inning that scored Los Angeles starter Paul Maholm. The Dodgers have dropped the first two games of the series after sweeping Arizona to start a six-game road trip.
Vogelsong pitched six-plus innings in his best outing of the season so far but walked away with his third no-decision in three starts.
The right-hander struck out two and gave up one run on four hits and two walks as his ERA dipped from 8.00 to 5.40 through three starts.
"I think more than anything he just stayed consistent with his delivery from the first inning," said Giants manager Bruce Bochy. "A well-pitched game. He pounded the strike zone and going into the seventh inning he had a good pitch count."
Maholm yielded five hits, three walks and a run in six innings, striking out two.
"Me and (Vogelsong) were going back and forth," said Maholm. "It was a close game ... It was fun."
Posey's single through the left side in the third inning plated Hunter Pence from second base to give the Giants a 1-0 lead.
Vogelsong retired 10 straight batters before walking Maholm with two outs in the sixth and Gordon followed with a triple to the right-center field wall to tie the game for the Dodgers.
Ramirez jumped up and down and spiked his helmet after Vogelsong drilled him with a 90 mph fastball. The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out but walked away empty-handed after Jean Machi (3-0) got Juan Uribe to ground into a 1-2-3 double play.
Sandoval's line-drive single came against loser J.P. Howell (1-1), who replaced Maholm to start the inning and walked leadoff hitter Joaquin Arias.
Gordon had three hits for the Dodgers, including a two-out single off Santiago Casilla in the eighth inning.
Javier Lopez relieved Casilla and threw past first on a pickoff attempt, letting Gordon go to second, but Carl Crawford grounded out to end the inning and Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save.
Game Notes
The Giants have won three in a row and are 5-3 on a nine-game homestand ... Vogelsong picked Matt Kemp off at first base in the second inning on a call that was upheld after a review. Kemp shook his finger and head as if to say he was safe, but Dodgers manager Don Mattingly lost his challenge.
