Bad miscue helps Phils down Dodgers

Apr 23, 2014 - 6:30 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Domonic Brown's RBI double in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

With one out in the 10th, Carlos Ruiz skied a pop up to shallow left field where Carl Crawford and Hanley Ramirez miscommunicated as the ball bounced off Crawford's chest, falling to the turf.

Crawford was given an error on the play and Brown followed with a slicing double to left-center off J.P. Howell (1-2) to put the Phillies on top.

Antonio Bastardo (3-1) struck out two in the ninth to earn the win and Jonathan Papelbon nailed down his sixth save of the season for the Phillies, who have won a season high-tying three straight games.

Marlon Byrd and Ryan Howard supplied the other runs for Philadelphia, which saw starter A.J. Burnett go 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Burnett also went 3-for-3 from the dish in the win.

"Our bullpen was outstanding," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg. "Burnett was very good. Brown was big (with) a double after the error. Revere had a good day from the lead-off spot. A very good game."

Crawford and Justin Turner each had an RBI for the Dodgers, who have lost the first two games of this four-game set with the Phils.

Los Angeles starter Hyun-jin Ryu surrendered two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts over six innings in the no-decision.

"Ryu was really good tonight but wasn't as sharp as he's been," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "Our bullpen was good. On the defensive side, it's been a frustration for us. We have to get better."

Burnett led off the top of the fifth with a single to left, then moved to second on a single from Ben Revere, who went 4-for-5.

Jimmy Rollins flied out to left, but Byrd picked him up with a looping double to left that scored Burnett. Revere moved to third on the play and scored on Howard's sacrifice fly.

LA cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the inning, with Crawford's sacrifice fly plating Tim Federowicz, who led off the frame with a double.

Dee Gordon doubled with one out in the home half of the seventh and Turner brought him in two batters later with a single to left. The single spelled the end of Burnett's night.

The Phillies stranded a runner on second in the ninth and the Dodgers squandered a one-out single from Juan Uribe in the home half as the game headed to extra innings.
