Ruiz, Phillies rally past Dodgers
Apr 25, 2014 - 7:12 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Ruiz's two-run double in the ninth inning plated the go-ahead run to lead the Philadelphia Phillies past the Los Angeles Dodgers, 7-3, in the finale of a four-game set.The Phillies ended up scoring four runs in the final frame. With two on and one out, Ruiz laced a bases-clearing double off Brian Wilson (0-2) into the left-field corner. Wilson then intentionally walked Chase Utley before hitting Ryan Howard to load the bases, spelling the end of his night.
Marlon Byrd greeted Wilson's replacement, Jamey Wright, with a single to left to score Ruiz and Utley.
Ruiz finished 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored and Byrd had three hits and four RBI for the Phillies, who took three of four in the series.
"It was a big series with the four games against a hot team," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "We played good defense for four games and came up with some clutch hits."
Mike Adams (1-0) allowed one run -- an Adrian Gonzalez homer -- over two innings to earn the win. Starter Kyle Kendrick surrendered two runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings in the win.
Juan Uribe finished 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Dodgers. Dan Haren started for LA and gave up three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits while fanning seven.
"We have to continue to grind and get better," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We've hit a lot of home runs it seems like this year, but we haven't consistently put a bunch of runs up."
The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning. Gonzalez opened the inning with a double to right. Kendrick retired the next two hitter before Uribe lifted a homer to left.
The Phils pushed three runs across in the fifth to take the lead. With runners on the corners and one out, Utley ripped a ball to the right side of the infield and Gonzalez couldn't handle the chopper, allowing Ben Revere to score. Later in the inning, Byrd doubled to right center to clear the bases. LA right fielder Yasiel Puig had a chance to make a spectacular play as he dove for the ball near the warning track, but couldn't come up with the ball.
Adams retired the first hitter of the seventh inning, but Gonzalez clobbered the first pitch he saw, a hanging slider, into the stands in right-center.
