Baker drives Marlins past Dodgers
May 5, 2014 - 12:49 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jeff Baker smacked an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the rubber match of a three-game set. With two outs, Baker drove a ball deep to right that Yasiel Puig went all out for, leaping into the wall and barely missing the catch as Adeiny Hechavarria scored for the win.
Hechavarria singled to lead off the ninth, was sacrificed to second and reached third on a groundout before the Baker double.
Giancarlo Stanton homered twice and collected three RBI and Christian Yelich added a homer for the Marlins, who have won five of six.
Marlins starter Jose Fernandez surrendered three runs -- two earned -- while fanning 10 and walking four through seven frames. A.J. Ramos (2-0) earned the win despite allowing the tying run in the top of the ninth.
"It wasn't an easy game, I gave everything that I had out there," said Fernandez. "Like everybody know's, the Dodgers are one of the best teams in the league. That's why they get paid the way they get paid. We just tried to go out there and do our best. I was trying to give my team a chance to win, once again."
Hanley Ramirez, Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier drove in a run apiece for Los Angeles, which saw starter Stephen Fife allow four runs on seven hits while striking out five over six-plus innings. Jamey Wright (2-2) allowed one run on two hits through 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
"The first one in the first inning was a fastball. I can handle the first one but the next two are just kind of unacceptable," said Fife about allowing three home runs.
"I tried to stick with Fernandez, it's a pretty dang good pitcher over there, just tried to keep the team in the game as long as possible."
The Dodgers entered the ninth trailing 4-3 before an Ethier double scored Chone Figgins to tie the game. Stanton misplayed Ethier's hit, allowing Figgins to score after walking to lead off the ninth.
Dee Gordon then fanned and Puig was intentionally walked before Ramirez slapped a grounder that Hechavarria made a diving stop on. From his stomach, Hechavarria tossed to second for a force out, but Puig was originally ruled safe on the play. However, the play was challenged and overturned, which left the Dodgers with runners on the corners with two outs. Ramos then got Adrian Gonzalez to ground out, ending the threat.
Earlier, Stanton got the scoring started in the first with a two-run blast over the right-field fence. Derek Dietrich singled before Stanton's bomb.
In the third, Gordon walked and Puig singled on a hit and run, sending Gordon to third. Ramirez singled in Gordon before a passed ball plated Puig, knotting the game at 2-2.
Miami regained the lead in the fifth when Yelich stroked a solo homer to deep right, making the score 3-2.
With two outs in the sixth, the Dodgers bounced back and tied the game. Gonzalez walked and Matt Kemp singled before Crawford singled home Gonzalez.
Stanton led off the bottom of the sixth with a powerful answer. He smoked a frozen rope off the facade in left, putting the Marlins ahead 4-3.
