Giants use 3-run 10th to down Dodgers
May 12, 2014 - 3:00 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Pablo Sandoval smacked a tiebreaking single to spark San Francisco's three-run 10th inning, as the Giants secured a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the finale of a four-game set Sunday at Dodger Stadium.Hanley Ramirez tied the game with a two-out, two-run homer off Sergio Romo in the bottom of the ninth, but the Giants scored three times in the 10th to regain control.
Los Angeles closer Kenley Jansen (0-2) started the frame on the mound and promptly loaded the bases after sandwiching a pair of walks around a Hunter Pence single.
Sandoval then ripped a single through the left side of the infield to score Angel Pagan, and after Brandon Hicks fanned, pinch-hitter Hector Sanchez looped a single into shallow left field to score Pence.
J.P. Howell then replaced Jansen on the mound and retired Gregor Blanco before uncorking a wild pitch that plated Buster Posey for a 7-4 San Francisco lead.
Jean Machi stranded runners on second and third in the 10th to pick his first career save, while Romo (3-0) was credited with the win despite giving up Ramirez's game-tying blast in the ninth.
Sandoval finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, Hicks hit a two-run homer, and Pagan scored three times for the Giants, who took three of four from the Dodgers to secure their fourth straight series win over LA.
"It was nice to see him go out there and get three knocks," Giants pitcher Tim Hudson said about Sandoval.
Yasiel Puig smacked a solo shot for the Dodgers, who have dropped four of their last five games.
Sandoval's RBI double in the opening frame served as the game's only run until Puig opened the sixth with his sixth home run of the season. After Ramirez followed with a double, Adrian Gonzalez laced a run-scoring single to center to give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead.
Los Angeles left-hander Clayton Kershaw, who was making his first home start of the season, was unable to maintain the margin, as Sandoval started the seventh with a single before Hicks clubbed an 0-2 curveball out to left, providing the visitors with a 3-2 lead.
"For me to give up that home run after just getting the lead right back is disappointing. I've got to shut the door right there," Kershaw said.
Posey added an RBI single in the eighth to extend the margin, but Dee Gordon ripped a one-out double in the ninth to give the Dodgers some life. Romo then fanned Puig for the second out, but Ramirez ripped an 0-1 slider just over the wall in left to tie the game and force extra innings.
Game Notes
Puig went 2-for-5 to extend his career-high hitting streak to 11 games ... Kershaw struck out nine and allowed three runs on seven hits over seven frames ... The San Francisco starter Hudson surrendered two runs on eight hits over six innings ... LA went 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 11 men on base ... The Giants finished 4-for-13 with RISP and stranded seven baserunners ... Andre Ethier had three hits for the Dodgers.
