Puig, Dodgers hold off Marlins

May 13, 2014 - 6:25 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yasiel Puig clubbed a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth and finished with four RBI, as the Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Miami Marlins, 6-5, in the opener of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium.

Puig homered for the second straight game to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead before adding a bases-loaded walk an inning later to extend the margin to 6-3.

Pinch-hitter Reed Johnson ripped a two-run homer in the eighth to bring the Marlins within one, but Kenley Jansen retired the side in order in the ninth to nail down his 12th save of the season.

LA starter Dan Haren (5-1) held Miami to three runs on seven hits over seven strong frames to pick up the win and added an RBI single at the plate.

Andre Ethier also drove in a run for the Dodgers, who dropped three of four in San Francisco over the weekend.

"I thought we all did a good job tonight," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We did a good job of getting on base and Yasiel's homer was huge for us."

The loss was the least of Miami's worries on Monday, as the team placed star pitcher Jose Fernandez on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow strain. The Marlins are still awaiting the results of an MRI, but early indications point to the reigning National League Rookie of the Year needing season-inning surgery on his pitching elbow.

"It's a tough day. I haven't slept much," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said, referring to the news about Fernandez. "It's a big blow, but we have to move on. These games keep going. We need someone to step up."

With the Marlins in desperate need of a solid start, Tom Koehler (3-3) failed to deliver, giving up four runs on six hits and five walks in just 3 2/3 innings to absorb the loss. Koehler threw 103 pitches, just 57 of which found the strike zone.

Christian Yelich laced a solo shot and scored three times, while Giancarlo Stanton knocked in two runs for the Marlins, who have lost four straight.

Miami jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Yelich smacked a leadoff single, stole second, moved to third on a flyout and scored on Stanton's groundout to first. Stanton was originally ruled safe on the play, but the call on the field was overturned following a challenge and a video review.

Haren stroked a two-out single with runners on the corners in the second to even the score, but Yelich ripped his fourth homer of the season with one out in the third to restore Miami's lead.

Derek Dietrich followed Yelich's drive with a double before scoring on Stanton's single to center to make it 3-1.

Puig put the Dodgers in front in the fourth with his two-out blast deep into the seats in left-center field. Drew Butera worked a one-out walk and Dee Gordon kept the frame alive with a two-out free pass before Puig pummeled a first-pitch fastball to give the Dodgers a 4-3 lead.

In the fifth, Matt Kemp worked a leadoff walk, stole second and scored on Ethier's single to right for a 5-3 lead.

After Ethier was caught stealing and Justin Turner lined out, Butera doubled before Henry Rodriguez issued three straight walks, capped by Puig's bases- loaded free pass that made it 6-3 in favor of the home team.

Haren has made 12 consecutive starts without allowing more than three earned runs ... The Marlins dropped to 3-14 on the road this season ... Koehler became the second pitcher in Marlins history to throw at least 100 pitches in under four innings, joining Mark Redman on July 12, 2003 ... Stanton extended his hit streak to 14 games, while Puig pushed his hit streak to 12 games.
