DeSclafani wins in MLB debut as Marlins rout Dodgers
May 15, 2014 - 6:34 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Charged with the tough task of filling in for Miami ace Jose Fernandez, Anthony DeSclafani received a heavy dose of support from his teammates.Ed Lucas, Reed Johnson and Jeff Mathis each homered as the Marlins avoided a three-game road sweep by blasting the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-3.
DeSclafani was summoned from Double-A Jacksonville to make his major league debut in place of Fernandez, who has been advised to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow.
Miami's bats erupted for season-high totals in runs and hits (17), giving DeSclafani (1-0) plenty of breathing room. The 24-year-old right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out seven in six innings.
"I told (DeSclafani) before the game to go out and have some fun. He was locked in, he was focused," said Marlins manager Mike Redmond.
DeSclafani also registered his first big league hit and picked up two RBI.
Giancarlo Stanton extended his career-best hitting streak to 16 games, finishing 3-for-3 with a walk for the Marlins, who snapped a five-game skid.
It was a nightmarish outing for Paul Maholm (1-4). The Dodgers' left-hander surrendered 10 runs -- five earned -- on 11 hits and walked three in 3 2/3 innings.
"Paul was frustrated. Everything went against him tonight," said Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly.
The Marlins blew the game open with six runs in both the second and fourth innings.
Miami loaded the bases with one out in the second and two runs scored when Los Angeles second baseman Dee Gordon booted a high chopper hit by DeSclafani. Christian Yelich followed with a sacrifice fly, Lucas belted a two-run homer to left field and Stanton, who doubled, scored on a Jeff Baker infield single.
The bases were loaded again in the fourth, this time with nobody out, and Maholm appeared on the verge of limiting the damage after getting Baker to ground into a double play.
However, Johnson launched a two-run homer to left-center, and Mathis crushed a three-run shot to right-center off reliever Chris Perez to make it 12-0.
Yasiel Puig put the Dodgers on the board in the fifth with an RBI double, pushing the longest hit streak of his career to 14 games.
DeSclafani plated Garrett Jones with a single in the sixth before giving up a solo home run to Carl Crawford in the bottom of the inning.
Veteran Randy Wolf, who signed with the Marlins on Wednesday, tossed the final three innings to earn his first save in the majors.
Game Notes
Stanton has hit safely in 13 straight games against the Dodgers ... The Marlins were 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position ... Dodgers catcher Drew Butera pitched the ninth inning ...
