Ryu, bullpen help Dodgers take series
Jun 23, 2014 - 2:20 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Los Angeles starter Hyun-Jin Ryu and a trio of Dodgers relievers made an early lead stand up in Sunday's 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.Ryu (9-3) tossed five shutout innings before allowing a run in the sixth.
The Padres had just one baserunner in the final three innings against the Los Angeles bullpen. Kenley Jansen threw 13 pitches while striking out the side in the ninth for his 22nd save of the season.
Los Angeles took two of three in the series and have won seven of its last nine games overall.
"It felt good to get this series," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We got a couple of runs early and you'd like to keep tacking on. Hyun-Jin was throwing the ball good and our bullpen did a nice job to held on for the series."
The Dodgers scored a run in each of the first two innings against San Diego starter Eric Stults (2-10), who settled down to pitch seven frames.
The news before Sunday's finale was the Padres relieving general manager Josh Byrnes of his duties.
"This ownership group is committed to fielding a team that consistently competes for postseason play," said Padres president and CEO Mike Dee in a statement. "Thus far this season, the results on the field have been mixed at best and clearly have not lived up to expectations. After a lengthy evaluation of every facet of our baseball operations, we have decided to make this change today."
A light-hitting offense is the main cause of the Padres' struggles, and they had only four hits Sunday, two coming in the sixth.
Chris Denorfia led off with a double and scored after consecutive groundouts. Tommy Medica kept the frame alive with a double, but Ryu ended his outing by getting Rene Rivera on a foul popup to first.
Stults, winless since May 10, ran into early trouble.
Hanley Ramirez hit a one-out single in the first, stole second, advanced to third on a wild-pitch ball four to Yasiel Puig and scored when Adrian Gonzalez grounded into a fielder's choice.
Scott Van Slyke led off the second with a base hit and A.J. Ellis worked a one-out walk. After a Ryu sacrifice bunt, Ellis was gunned down at the plate by Denorfia trying to score along with Van Slyke on a Dee Gordon single to right.
