Fiers stars as Brewers clip Dodgers
Aug 10, 2014 - 4:27 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Fiers tossed eight terrific innings in his first start of the season and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 4-1, on Saturday.Fiers (1-1) needed just 101 pitches to get through eight one-run innings and strike out five to help Milwaukee to its fourth win in five games. The 29-year-old hadn't pitched in the majors since June 24, but made four relief appearances with the Brewers earlier this season.
"I was just confident. You just have to be confident in yourself every time you go out," said Fiers. "I was throwing the ball well so I was just trying to ride it out as long as I could."
Khris Davis and Carlos Gomez homered for the Brewers, while Jonathan Lucroy went 3-for-4 with a run after missing Friday's game with a strained hamstring. Aramis Ramirez also had three hits with an RBI.
Zack Greinke (12-8) lost his second straight start after surrendering all four runs on eight hits over six innings. Greinke has lost four of his last five decisions.
"It wasn't a good game overall," said Greinke. "I made a lot of pitches over the plate."
Scooter Gennett singled with one out in the second inning and Davis followed with his 19th home run of the season to stake the Brewers with an early 2-0 lead.
Fiers retired the first eight batters he faced before walking Greinke with two outs in the third. He got Dee Gordon to ground into a fielder's choice to keep his no-hitter intact through three innings.
Adrian Gonzalez broke it up an inning later, crushing a solo homer to right field.
The margin held until the sixth inning, when Gomez led off with a solo shot to make it 3-1. Lucroy followed with a single, Ryan Braun walked and Ramirez added another run with an RBI single to center.
Francisco Rodriguez came on in the ninth and walked pinch-hitter Andre Ethier before recording the next two outs. Gonzalez blooped a single into right- center just past a diving Gennett to bring the tying run to the plate, but Matt Kemp grounded out weakly to first to end the game.
Rodriguez earned his 35th save of the season.
Game Notes
Fiers picked up his 11th career win. Three of those have come against the Dodgers ... Los Angeles shortstop Hanley Ramirez did not play after leaving Friday's game in the first inning with tightness in his right side. Ramirez is listed as day-to-day ... Gonzalez now has nine home runs in 23 career games in Milwaukee.
