Gallardo ends Kershaw's streak as Brewers nip Dodgers
Aug 17, 2014 - 4:25 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yovani Gallardo outdueled the recently unbeatable Clayton Kershaw, and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-2, in the second of three from Dodger Stadium.Gallardo (8-6) went toe-to-toe with the two-time Cy Young Award winner, giving up a run on six hits over eight efficient frames. The Milwaukee right-hander improved to 3-0 with a 0.82 ERA over his last three starts on the road.
"They were swinging early and that's good," said Gallardo. "It meant that I was in the strike zone. I just tried to keep the lead. We won. That's the most important thing."
Kershaw (14-3), meanwhile, continued his brilliance on the mound but took a loss for the first time since May 28, a span of 14 starts. The southpaw was victimized by a pair of homers as he allowed three runs on five hits and struck out 11 in his sixth complete game of the season.
"I thought Clayton pitched a really good game," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "He just missed his spots on two pitches. Give them credit. Gallardo shut us down."
Kershaw, who went 11-0 with a 1.16 ERA over his 13-start unbeaten run, was vying to become the first Los Angeles pitcher to win 12 straight decisions since Burt Hooton in 1975.
Los Angeles' franchise hasn't won 14 consecutive games with one pitcher on the mound since the Brooklyn Robins won 15 straight starts by Dazzy Vance in 1924.
Ryan Braun and Carlos Gomez each homered off Kershaw to help the NL Central- leading Brewers to a third straight victory. Los Angeles has dropped five of its last seven home games.
Kershaw hadn't allowed a hit over the first three innings, but Gomez led off the fourth with a double to left and Braun cracked his 15th homer of the season two batters later to give Milwaukee an early cushion.
"It was a fastball," Braun said of the home run. "I didn't see the location, but it must have been a mistake. I hit it pretty good. It's tough to hit one out of here at night."
Los Angeles responded in the home fourth to cut the deficit in half. Carl Crawford singled on a ground ball to second baseman Rickie Weeks, stole second and scored on Justin Turner's base hit to center.
Gomez launched his 19th homer of the season to begin the sixth and restore the Brewers' two-run lead.
Francisco Rodriguez was called upon in the ninth after Gallardo amassed just 96 pitches in a valiant effort.
Kemp, however, started the ninth by blasting a solo homer to left that cut the deficit to one. Rodriguez settled in, though, striking out Crawford and Turner with textbook changeups before getting pinch-hitter Andre Ethier to ground out for his 38th save of the season.
Game Notes
Prior to the game, the Dodgers placed infielder Juan Uribe on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring. In a corresponding move, LA recalled infielder Carlos Triunfel from Triple-A Albuquerque ... Gomez and Aramis Ramirez each had two hits in the win ... Braun homered for the first time since July 24 ... Crawford, who was the only Dodgers player to record more than one hit, stole his 17th base of the season ... The Dodgers look to salvage a game in this series when Dan Haren takes the hill opposite Wily Peralta on Sunday.
