Nationals outlast Dodgers in 14 innings

Sep 4, 2014 - 2:12 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam LaRoche beat out a double-play grounder to allow the go-ahead run to score in the top of the 14th inning and the Washington Nationals went on to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-5.

LaRoche didn't start Wednesday's rubber match of this three-game set because of a sore back, but finished with five RBI.

He delivered a pinch-hit, game-tying two-run homer in the ninth and plated a pair with a bases-loaded single in the 12th for a 5-3 Washington lead.

"This was a crazy game, back and forth all day long," said Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper. "For Adam to do what he did is pretty impressive."

After failing to score with the bases loaded in the previous two innings, the Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the 12th. Carl Crawford followed Juan Uribe's two-out single with a homer to left-center field off Tyler Clippard.

Jayson Werth, who dropped what would have been the final out in the ninth, struck out to open the 14th. Ian Desmond then reached on a Justin Turner throwing error and advanced to third on a Kevin Correia (2-3) wild pitch after Harper walked.

The Nationals went back in front when Los Angeles couldn't turn an inning- ending double play as LaRoche narrowly beat the throw to first base.

Asdrubal Cabrera provided some breathing room with a two-run homer to right.

Blake Treinen (2-3) pitched the final two innings for Washington, which secured its first series win at Dodger Stadium since May 2005.

"We had a few chances, but it didn't work out for us," said Los Angeles manager Don Mattingly.

The Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the ninth after LaRoche and Denard Span rallied the Nationals in the top of the ninth.

Kenley Jansen recorded the final out in the eighth, stranding a pair, and when the Los Angeles closer came back out for the ninth, Harper greeted him with a single. LaRoche then homered to left field off Jansen, tying the game at 2-2.

Jose Lobaton reached on a one-out single and pinch-runner Danny Espinosa stole second base before scoring the go-ahead run on Span's two-out, sharply hit single past first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

Pedro Baez replaced Jansen and retired Anthony Rendon on a popup to short to end the frame.

Pinch-hitter Andre Ethier drew a walk against Washington closer Rafael Soriano in the home ninth and scored the tying run when Werth misplayed Turner's two-out fly ball in the right-field corner.

Los Angeles rookie Carlos Frias held Washington to three hits over six scoreless innings in his first big league start.

Washington starter Jordan Zimmermann matched zeros with the 24-year-old Frias through six frames, but gave up a two-run homer to Turner in the seventh.

Turner had claimed earlier in the at-bat that he was hit by a pitch, resulting in a challenge from Mattingly. Turner continued his at-bat after a replay review upheld the call.

Losing the challenge proved beneficial for Los Angeles, as Turner broke the scoreless tie by homering to center field.

The Nationals hit a home run in a 12th consecutive game, tying the longest streak by the team since moving to Washington, D.C. in 2005 ... The last Dodger to toss at least six scoreless innings in his first MLB start was Hong- Chih Kuo against the New York Mets on Sept. 8, 2006 ...
