Bumgarner wins 18th as Giants blank Dodgers; Ryu exits with injury
Sep 13, 2014 - 6:58 AM San Francisco, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Brandon Crawford and Travis Ishikawa homered to back seven scoreless innings from Madison Bumgarner, as the San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 9-0, in the opener of a key three-game series.Bumgarner (18-9) gave up just three hits while striking out nine and walking two for the Giants, who moved within one game of Los Angeles for first place in the NL West -- the slimmest the margin has been since Aug. 4.
The left-hander has won five straight starts and is tied with Adam Wainwright, Johnny Cueto and Clayton Kershaw for the most wins in baseball.
"It's not hard to get up for the Dodgers series, especially the circumstances we're in," said Bumgarner.
The Giants have won a season-best 10 straight home games for the first time since an 11-game run from July 7-25, 2003.
Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-7) got the start for the Dodgers and lasted just one inning. The left-hander gave up four runs on five hits before leaving with left shoulder irritation.
The Giants jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first. Joe Panik doubled and raced home on Buster Posey's double to left. Hunter Pence and Joaquin Arias added RBI singles, and Crawford hit an RBI double later in the inning.
The Dodgers left the bases loaded in the fifth when Adrian Gonzalez flied out.
"We had the bases loaded, and if we get a hit or scratch out a run, we can get back in the game," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly.
Crawford hit a two-run homer in the fifth and Ishikawa, in a pinch-hit role, splashed a three-run home run into McCovey Cove in the seventh.
Game Notes
The Giants are 8-6 against the Dodgers this season ... Bumgarner reached 200 strikeouts for the first time in his career when he fanned Scott Van Slyke in the second ... The Dodgers went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded six.
