Dodgers win, keep Giants from clinching WC
Sep 24, 2014 - 6:54 AM Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Turner homered twice off Madison Bumgarner and the Los Angeles Dodgers inched closer to clinching the NL West with a 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday.Turner led off the game with a homer and hit another solo shot in the eighth inning as the Dodgers bounced back from Monday's 13-inning loss to push their lead over the Giants back to 4 1/2 games atop the division.
Matt Kemp added a two-run blast for Los Angeles and Zack Greinke pitched eight innings for the win, his only mistake a slider Bumgarner hit over the wall for a two-run homer in the third inning.
Kemp's homer in the first inning came after both benches and bullpens cleared when Bumgarner hit Yasiel Puig with a pitch and the stars jawed at each other.
The Giants could have clinched a playoff spot with a win after Milwaukee lost in Cincinnati on Tuesday. Instead, they hold the second wild-card spot behind Pittsburgh, which clinched with a victory at Atlanta. The Giants remained five games ahead of the Brewers for the final NL playoff spot.
The Dodgers, who have already secured a playoff berth, cut their magic number to win the division to one with four games left and staff ace Clayton Kershaw scheduled to pitch Wednesday's series finale against Tim Hudson.
"He's really good and he has pitched really good against us," Turner said of Bumgarner. "Zack went out there and Zack looked better tonight."
Greinke (16-8) improved to 5-0 in five starts against the Giants this season and to 4-0 in his last seven starts. He allowed six hits, no walks and struck out five before Kenley Jansen worked around a Buster Posey single in the ninth inning to secure his 44th save.
The Giants, who have lost four of five, have five games remaining -- one more than the Dodgers.
Bumgarner (18-10) pitched into the eighth inning but had a three-game winning streak at Dodger Stadium snapped. He lost for the first time in his last eight starts (6-1) after allowing four runs, six hits and no walks.
"We're just trying to win. That's it," Bumgarner said. "All we can worry about is going out there and getting a win tomorrow."
There were sparks in the first inning, and not just from homers by Turner and Kemp.
After Turner's leadoff blast, Bumgarner hit Puig on the left foot with a 1-2 pitch and appeared to exchange words, leading to a scrum but no punches.
Puig, who was also hit in Monday's series opener, scored on Kemp's blast to straightaway center field, giving the Dodgers an early 2-0 lead.
Bumgarner, who has two grand slams this season, reached down to knock a slider over the left-center field wall with one out in the third inning to pull the Dodgers within 3-2. It was his fourth homer of the season, extending a career high.
Turner homered again with one out in the eighth inning, chasing Bumgarner.
