Phils beat Fernandez, Marlins to end skid

Apr 12, 2014 - 6:17 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Marlon Byrd had a double and two RBI to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-3 win over the Miami Marlins at Citizens Bank Park.

Chase Utley and Ryan Howard each had an RBI and two runs scored for the Phillies, who snapped a four-game skid. Domonic Brown added two hits and drove in a run.

A.J. Burnett threw 4 1/3 frames for Philadelphia before exiting the game with groin soreness as a precautionary measure. He fanned four while allowing two runs and issuing six walks.

Jake Diekman (1-0) struck out the two batters he faced in relief of Burnett to pick up the win. Jonathan Papelbon set Miami down in order in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Derek Dietrich hit a two-run homer and Jeff Baker picked up an RBI for the Marlins, who have lost five straight.

"We had guys on base but couldn't get anything going," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.

Jose Fernandez (2-1) was knocked around for six runs on eight hits over four- plus innings of work, while striking out six and walking four.

"We wanted to be aggressive early on in the game with strikes in the zone. You don't want to get in the hole too often with him. Guys swung the bats early and that set the tone," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said.

Philadelphia wasted no time getting on the board, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. Jimmy Rollins singled before Utley hit into a fielder's choice. Howard then walked, preceding a Byrd double off the top of the left field fence to plate Utley. Howard then scored on a single to right field by Brown, however, Byrd was thrown out at the plate on the play to end the inning.

The Marlins fired right back in the second after Dietrich smacked a two-run homer. Casey McGehee walked before being forced out at second on a Jarrod Saltalamacchia grounder, which Dietrich followed with his long ball to right.

The Phillies started the bottom of the third with back-to-back walks from Tony Gwynn Jr. and Rollins. Utley singled up the middle to load the bases before Howard worked a walk to push the hosts ahead again.

The Marlins couldn't capitalize with two runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings. They had the bases full in the fifth with one out, but Diekman fanned Saltalamacchia and Dietrich to escape the jam.

Philadelphia kept rolling in the fifth, putting three more runs on the board. Rollins led off with a triple before three consecutive singles from Utley, Howard and Byrd made it 5-2. Howard scored when Carlos Ruiz grounded into a double play.

The Marlins picked up one more run in the eighth when Baker hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Saltalamacchia.
