Rollins HR in 10th sends Phillies past Marlins
Apr 13, 2014 - 6:56 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Rollins stroked a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to send the Philadelphia Phillies to a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday in the second installment of a three-game set from Citizens Bank Park. With the game tied 4-4 to start the home half of the 10th, Dan Jennings (0-1) retired the first two hitters before Rollins lifted a towering fly ball down the left-field line that landed in the first row of seats to give the Phillies their second straight win.
"Jimmy is playing well. He is doing a great job, he's swinging the bat, he's setting the tone, one of the guys setting the tone at the top of the order, and he's playing good baseball," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg about Rollins.
Rollins finished 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Chase Utley added a pair of run-scoring doubles in the victory. B.J. Rosenberg (1-0) retired the Marlins in order in the top of the 10th to pick up the win.
Giancarlo Stanton homered twice and drove in three runs for the Marlins, who have lost six straight games.
Other than Rollins' homer, the Phillies did all their damage against Miami starter Nathan Eovaldi, touching the 24-year-old right-hander for two runs in the first and two more in the third.
Tony Gwynn, Jr. started things with a double off the right-field wall and Rollins followed with a single to center to score Gwynn. Utley then laced a double into the gap in left-center to score Rollins for a 2-0 lead.
Miami answered in the second, as Jarrod Saltalamacchia worked a leadoff walk before Adeiny Hechavarria and Christian Yelich each singled to load the bases with two outs.
Philadelphia starter Jonathan Pettibone appeared poised to escape the frame unscathed after Marcell Ozuna followed with a chopper to short, but first baseman Ryan Howard was unable to hang on to Rollins' low throw, allowing Saltalamacchia to score to make it 2-1.
Stanton then slapped a grounder back up the middle that Utley made a diving stab on behind second base before flipping to Rollins at second.
The umpires originally called Ozuna save at second on the close force play, which would have scored at least one run, but after a challenge from Sandberg, video review showed Rollins' foot barely beat Ozuna to the bag to end the inning.
The Phillies tacked on two more runs in the third, as Utley ripped a double down the right-field line to score Gwynn before crossing the plate when Howard followed with a single through the shift on the right side for a 4-1 lead.
"Not too many first-pitch strikes. After the third inning, I finally started to settle down," Eovaldi said.
Stanton smashed a mammoth blast deep to left-center field with none on in the fifth before belting a two-run shot in the seventh to tie the game. Ozuna singled before Stanton ripped the first pitch he saw from Justin De Fratus into the seats in left to make it 4-4.
