Stanton's slam in 9th lifts Marlins past M's
Apr 19, 2014 - 4:07 AM Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Giancarlo Stanton's grand slam in the ninth inning gave the Miami Marlins a dramatic 8-4 win over the Seattle Mariners to open a three-game set.Three straight batters reached base against Yoervis Medina (0-1) to set the plate for Stanton, who cracked a 1-1 curveball over the wall in left-center for the win.
Prior to the home run, Reed Johnson was ruled out on a sacrifice bunt play, but a replay determined that third baseman Kyle Seager had juggled the ball.
"Once I saw it in the air I was all pumped up," said Miami manager Mike Redmond. "I'm happy that it went out for him. I was fired up that we one the challenge because it was finally a break that went our way."
Stanton finished the game 3-for-3 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a solo home run for the Marlins, who have won two of three.
Stanton continued his hot start to the season, as he is now batting .329 with six home runs and a league-leading 26 RBI. It was his second career walk-off grand slam, with the other coming on May 13, 2012 against the Mets.
Nathan Eovaldi pitched six innings and gave up three runs -- one earned -- on seven hits, while Steve Cishek (1-0) tossed a perfect ninth for the win.
Brad Miller and Corey Hart each drove in a run for the Mariners, who have dropped their past four. Chris Young was tagged for four runs on seven hits in just three innings of work.
"The little things just aren't going our way right now," said Hart. "We're in every ballgame so the confidence is still there that we're a good club. You're going to go through stretches like this."
Miami pushed a pair of runs across in the first inning on RBI singles from Stanton and Casey McGehee to grab a quick 2-0 lead.
Seattle got one back in the second as Michael Saunders singled to start the frame and later scored when Dustin Ackley's single to right saw Stanton misplay the ball, which rolled all the way to the wall and Ackley hustled home to tie the game.
The Marlins took the lead back in the bottom of the second on Marcell Ozuna's sac fly that scored Nathan Eovaldi for a 3-2 lead.
Saltalamacchia's solo homer with one out in the third, his second of the season, pushed the margin to 4-2.
In the fifth, the Mariners got a leadoff triple from Abraham Almonte, and he scored when Miller followed with a groundout to make it a 4-3 game.
Hart's RBI single in the seventh tied the contest at 4-4.
