Gee, Mets shut out Marlins to take series
Apr 27, 2014 - 10:43 PM Flushing, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Dillon Gee tossed eight innings of shutout ball and Chris Young belted a two-run homer to highlight the New York Mets' 4-0 victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday.Gee (2-1) gave up more walks (four) than hits (three) and struck out six for the Mets, who bounced back after an extra-inning loss Saturday to take the rubber match of this three-game set.
"My only goal every time I take the mound is to try to get as deep as I can and give us a chance to win," Gee said.
David Wright and Lucas Duda each drove in a run for New York's offense, while Miami's only mustered three singles all afternoon.
Bronx native Tom Koehler (2-2) took the loss after being touched for four runs on five hits and four walks over five innings.
Duda's ground-rule double in the second inning plated Daniel Murphy, and the Mets added three more in the fifth for good measure.
Curtis Granderson led off the frame with a walk and raced around to score when Wright doubled off the base of the left-field wall.
Young followed two batters later with a no-doubter into the left-field seats on the 11th pitch of his at-bat, and the Marlins' bats were held quiet by Gee.
The right-hander only allowed one hit through six innings and shook off two singles in the seventh with a pair of groundouts, the second an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play ball off the bat of Adeiny Hechavarria.
Carlos Torres finished off Gee's gem with a 1-2-3 ninth.
"We have to execute better offensively," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said.
